The Los Angeles County Office of Education is seeking server engineer professionals for a temporary assignment of approximately three months.
Under general direction, leads and performs complex technical work in the design, acquisition, development, implementation, and maintenance of LAN, WAN, and cloud- and server-based computer systems, software, and monitoring tools; makes recommendations for specific server solutions for hosting LAN, WAN, and cloud-based applications.
The Well Qualified Candidate Will Possess the Following
Knowledge:
- Windows and Linux servers (i.e. Red Hat), including hardware, server operating systems and related monitoring and backup systems
- Modern high availability and reliability technologies that include SAN based storage
- VMWare virtual infrastructure where both servers and storage are virtualized
- Enterprise backup solutions using SAN technology and enterprise- class connected tape libraries
- Enterprise patch management solution, anti-virus administration and reporting technologies
- Enterprise monitoring of server utilization and performance, using tools such as PRTG, VRealize, and Veeam One
- Software applications, database systems including installation, configuration, backup, recovery, and overall administration
- Server applications and databases, such as MS SQL, in a large-scale environment
- Data systems analysis and design techniques, including using tools such as Vizio
- Techniques used in writing programs for computer operations, such as Power Shell or Bash scripting
- Basic budgetary principles
- Project management using ITIL methodology
- Cloud-based implementation strategies using Azure or AWS

Education: An associate’s degree or equivalent number of college units (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) including at least 15 semester units in computer science, information technology, or other fields closely related to the job requirements of this classification from an institution of higher learning recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation. Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Experience: Five years of information technology experience, including two years designing, developing, and implementing servers, Windows and Linux server operating systems, and/or cloud-based applications, in a large-scale environment (50+ servers, 1000+ users) providing 24/7 datacenter support operation, OR two years as a LACOE Server Engineer.
Equivalency Provision: A Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) certification, a Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) certification, or bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or other fields closely related to the job requirements of this classification from an institution of higher learning recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation may substitute for one year of the required general experience. Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Additional Requirements: A valid California driver’s license and the availability of private transportation or the ability to provide transportation between job sites is required. Qualifying experience as a SQL/MySQL Server database administrator is highly desired. Positions in this classification may be assigned to work a non-standard workweek that might include working weekends and shifts from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM or 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM.
Hybrid remote schedules may be available. To ensure the health and safety of its staff, LACOE may require employees to provide evidence of full vaccination against COVID-19.
