Definition of Position:
The Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) Coordinator is responsible for the coordination, oversight, and continual improvement of the hospital’s POCT program in accordance with CLIA, DNV, and hospital policies. This role ensures consistent and compliant performance of POC testing across all departments. The coordinator will directly supervise the Point-of-Care Lab Assistant, providing leadership, training, and operational direction to support day-to-day activities and programmatic goals. Will provide moderate complexity test training to Good Shepherd nursing staff.
Responsibilities:- Oversee and maintain the hospital-wide POCT program, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and accreditation requirements.
- Supervise the Point-of-Care Lab Assistant, including daily task delegation, training, and performance evaluation.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for all POCT devices and methodologies.
- Coordinate instrument verification, validation, calibration, and maintenance procedures.
- Lead or assist with troubleshooting instrument issues, reagent problems, or operator errors.
- Ensure quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), and proficiency testing (PT) are performed and documented appropriately.
- Review and maintain training and competency records for non-laboratory staff performing POCT.
- Provide training and competency assessment for nursing and clinical staff performing moderate complexity testing, ensuring documentation meets CLIA and institutional standards.
- Perform monthly document reviews to ensure accuracy and completeness of quality and compliance records.
- Collaborate with nursing, clinical staff, and department heads to support training, implementation, and auditing of POC testing protocols.
- Participate in inspections, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Monitor test utilization and supply inventory and recommend process improvements.
- Prepare and present program metrics and reports to lab leadership.

- Participates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position (reference program education curriculum).

Education
Required: Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or related field. Copy must be provided upon hire.

Licenses/ certifications/ registrations
Required: None required.
Preferred: ASCP or equivalent certification.
Experience
Required: Strong knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory requirements related to POC testing. Excellent communication, organization, and analytical skills.
Preferred: Minimum 2 years of clinical laboratory experience; experience with point-of-care testing programs strongly preferred. Prior leadership, mentoring, or supervisory experience.

The role requires the ability to lift to 50 pounds independently and involves frequent pushing, pulling, carrying, or repositioning of objects or patients weighing up to 25 pounds. There may also be occasional lifting or transferring of individuals weighing over 100 pounds, with the expectation that appropriate lifting techniques, mechanical aids, or team assistance will be used to ensure safety. Working Conditions:
This position is performed primarily in an indoor healthcare environment, such as a hospital, clinic, or long-term care facility. While the work setting is protected from outdoor weather conditions, it may be subject to variable indoor temperatures. The role involves frequent exposure to infectious and contagious diseases, hazardous materials, and medical equipment, with the expectation that all staff follow appropriate safety protocols and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
The health care environment can be fast-paced and unpredictable, requiring the ability to respond quickly to changing circumstances, including high-pressure or emergency situations. The work setting also involves multiple simultaneous demands and varying levels of noise due to medical equipment, staff activity, and patient needs.
