Job Summary: The Great Sacramento Surgery Center (GSSC) is a freestanding, fast-paced multi-specialty ASC that performs over 6000 procedures per year. PAT Staff Nurse is responsible for the pre-admission assessment via telephone of patients prior to day of surgery. Acts as a patient advocate to meet the individual needs of the patient, while supporting the philosophy, objectives and goals of the surgery center. Works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists and scheduling to ensure smooth surgical workflow. This requires strong knowledge in surgical procedures, medications and anesthesia techniques.
Essential Job Functions:
- Will communicate effectively, conscientiously and frequently with all team members to share information and independently solve problems in a positive, results oriented manager.
- Assess patients prior to surgery via telephone interview.
- Ensure that patients are appropriate for the outpatient setting, including co-morbidities, medications and surgical history that are contraindicated for procedure.
- Provide clear and concise preop instructions – including arrival time, NPO instructions, medication list, and ride home confirmation.
- Provide pre-operative instructions and emotional support to patient and family.
- Maintain and apply the scientific knowledge relevant to the care of requirements of the patient with consideration of age specific and developmental needs.
- Attend staff meetings, educational and safety programs.
- Demonstrate organizational skills to facilitate a smooth workflow.
- Demonstrate high quality customer service to our patients, their families, physicians and each other.
- Use effective communication techniques which adhere to common standards of courtesy.
- Reports to Pre-Op/PACU Manager
Requirements
Education, Licensure and Experience
- Minimum 2-3 years’ experience in a Pre-Op/PACU environment.
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in nursing or other health-related field or equivalent work experience. MHN preferred.
- Current California Registered Nurse (RN) License required.
- Successful completion of BLS, ACLS and PALS.
- Previous ambulatory surgery experience is preferred.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Nurse must possess general clinical competency in acute patient care.
- Nurse must demonstrate ability to gather pertinent medical history and provide concise instruction for pre-operative and post-operative care.
- Acute attention to detail
- Strong documentation and computer skills.
- Good judgment with the ability to make timely and sound decisions.
- Excellent communication skills, including both oral and written.
- Physically able to perform CPR.
- Able to maintain emotional stability
- Able to work around potential exposure to noise, chemical, and biological products.
- Able to tolerate wearing protective equipment such as goggles, face mask, cover gowns and gloves while performing required tasks.
- Able to tolerate marked changes in temperature and humidity.
- Must be in good physical condition to meet the demands of an active position
