Job Description: Safety Specialist
OVERALL JOB PURPOSE
Support the Safety Manager and Skyline Mine Management Team by actively promoting and facilitating safe work practices and behaviors. This role plays a key part in ensuring compliance with safety and health regulations and policies, contributing to the mine's overall safety and health goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Facilitate 8-hour on-site safety training sessions for all new hires and contract service personnel.
Lead, support and train all behavior-based safety initiatives across the site.
Administer and manage the mine's drug testing program in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements.
Prepare and deliver training for required certifications, including documentation and tracking of certification processes.
Manage all aspects of mine monitoring, including safety audits, inspections, and reporting.
Conduct job observations and inspections in both surface and underground areas of the mine.
Escort MSHA inspectors as needed and assist with regulatory compliance.
Inspect and maintain SCSR units and other safety equipment.
Assist with annual refresher training, hazard training, and other safety-related instruction.
Participate in injury and citation prevention efforts, including TapRoot investigations.
Disseminate safety information to all levels of hourly and management personnel.
Provide general safety support, including 24-hour on-call and weekend duties as needed.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum 5 years of underground mining experience preferred.
Utah State Mine Fireboss certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
EMT certification preferred.
MSHA Dust Sampling/Noise Certification or ability to obtain within 3 months.
MSHA Trainer certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Strong knowledge of federal mining regulations and safety standards.
Experience in mine rescue and firefighting procedures.
Strong analytical, decision-making, and communication skills (verbal and written).
Proficiency in MS Office and internet-based tools.
Excellent safety and attendance record.
