About the Department

Position Overview: The Program Specialist – 4-H supports the planning, development, and delivery of youth education programs in areas such as Afterschool programming, STEM education, Healthy Living, Middle and High School enrichment, and virtual learning. This role involves coordinating with 4-H club volunteers, assisting with community outreach, and facilitating program growth. The ideal candidate is passionate about youth development, capable of public speaking, and experienced with educational technology and digital platforms.

Position Duties

Key Responsibilities:

Youth Program Development & Delivery:

  • Assist in planning and implementing educational 4-H youth programs, particularly in STEM, agriculture, and horticulture.
  • Organize and conduct youth events, workshops, and enrichment activities.
  • Develop visual aids and materials for educational demonstrations.
  • Manage digital and virtual programming as needed.

Volunteer Coordination & Support:
  • Recruit and train adult volunteers to serve as 4-H club leaders.
  • Provide necessary resources and guidance to support club activities.
  • Maintain positive communication with volunteers and stakeholders.

Community Engagement & Outreach:
  • Build and maintain relationships with schools, youth-serving agencies, and community partners.
  • Promote the 4-H program through marketing, publicity efforts, and social media.
  • Interpret and communicate UF/IFAS Extension policies to the public and volunteers.

Administrative & Technical Duties:
  • Maintain records of activities and prepare reports.
  • Perform office duties including basic bookkeeping.
  • Manage 4-H social media accounts and digital content platforms.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires moderate physical activity, including frequent standing, walking, and occasional lifting or carrying of objects up to 50 pounds. Manual dexterity and good vision and hearing (with or without correction) are necessary for operating standard office equipment and engaging in outdoor educational activities.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND WORK HAZARDS: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, with frequent exposure to varying weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, or rain.

As a requirement of County employment, County employees are subject to being required to remain at work during an event, respond to a recall immediately following an event and/or immediately reporting to work when an all clear is declared by the County Administrator.  During these types of events, County employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates should possess a solid foundational background that demonstrates their ability to engage with the responsibilities of the role effectively.

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.   College degree from an accredited institution in business, education, public administration or related field is preferred.  Relevant experience, training or technical certifications may substitute for preferred college degree.
  • Experience with youth development programs, preferably in 4-H or similar organizations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, social media, digital design platforms, and video/media editing platforms.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to present information in an organized and clear manner 
  • Knowledge of basic bookkeeping and administrative tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in diverse settings.
  • Ability to handle and work with animals.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License and good driving record.

Driving Position – Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.
 
PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 2 background screening which includes fingerprinting.
