General Description: The City of Jacksonville is looking for an Equipment Operator I for the Streets Division in Public Services. This is an exciting opportunity to come join our team and receive training and career development geared towards advancing a career in public services. Equipment Operators are often responsible for a wide variety of jobs. Operators should be comfortable in the regular operation of backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, front loaders, bucket truck and light construction equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
The salary posted is the full salary range for this position. The starting salary is expected to be in the range of $37,332.05 - $48,531.81

Position Duties
Operating light construction equipment in the performance of maintenance and repair tasks. (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. • Operates mini excavator, backhoe, front loader, tandem dump trucks, bucket truck and related equipment in the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters and utility lines.
• Performs related tasks as required
There are multiple areas within the Streets Department an Equipment Operator I may work in, and they are as follows:
1. Closed Structure Stormwater Section
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Include:
- Operates mini excavator, backhoe, front loader, tandem dump trucks, bucket truck and related equipment in the maintenance and repair of stormwater utility lines.
- Use of Street sweepers to clean City streets
- Use equipment to demolish dilapidated structures
- Use of varies size of dump trucks to haul materials
- Clears rights-of-way with pole saws, chain saws, bush hog and large mowers
- Skilled in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; skilled in pre operational and post operational
- A pre-operational equipment checklist includes visual inspections of the equipment's exterior and interior, safety devices, and fluids before use, while a post-operational checklist focuses on identifying damage, leaks, and wear that occurred during operation
- Performs duties of Maintenance Worker when not operating equipment
- Use of survey equipment to evaluate elevations
2. Streets Pavements Section
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Include:
- Operates mini excavator, backhoe, front loader, tandem dump trucks, bucket truck and related equipment in the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters
- Use of varies size of dump trucks to haul materials
- Operates asphalt paver machinery to spread and level hot mix asphalt for roads, driveways, and other surfaces
- Skilled in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; skilled in pre operational and post operational
- A pre-operational equipment checklist includes visual inspections of the equipment's exterior and interior, safety devices, and fluids before use, while a post-operational checklist focuses on identifying damage, leaks, and wear that occurred during operation
- Applies herbicides and pesticides using motorized sprayer and hand held sprayer.
- Performs duties of Maintenance Worker when not operating equipment
- Use of survey equipment to evaluate elevations
3. Open Area Stormwater Section
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Include:
- Operates mini excavator, backhoe, front loader, tandem dump trucks, bucket truck and related equipment in the maintenance and repair of open stormwater structures
- Mows public rights-of-way and City property
- Applies herbicides and pesticides using motorized sprayer and hand held sprayer.
- Uses week eaters and chain saws to cut ditch banks and expose flow lines of ditches
- Performs duties of Maintenance Worker when not operating equipment
- Use of survey equipment to evaluate elevations
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe operation of a backhoe and excavator is required for this position. CDL preferred or the ability to obtain within the first 6 months of the probationary period.
Other Qualifications
General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating light construction equipment; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
