Laboratory Manager – Warrenville, IL

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing all operations, personnel, and quality systems within the Warrenville, IL laboratory. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Operations, this role ensures the lab functions efficiently, safely, and in compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations of the Warrenville laboratory, ensuring timely and accurate sample processing.
- Supervise and provide technical guidance to all lab personnel including but not limited to Group Leads, Lab Tech I, Lab Tech II, Scientist I, and Scientist II (including but not limited to).
- Ensure compliance with laboratory SOPs and regulatory standards including NELAP, IDPH, and CDC ELITE program requirements.
- Maintain standardization and alignment with PASL Standard Operating Procedures and the established PASL process.
- Maintain and improve quality control and assurance systems; ensure documentation meets accrediting agency standards.
- Manage inventory, ordering, and stocking of laboratory supplies and reagents.
- Receive, log, and process chemistry and microbiology samples independently.
- Perform and oversee testing for waterborne pathogens including Legionella (PVT, ISO 11731, Swab), THAB, and other relevant assays.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and cleanliness, including washing glassware, discarding expired samples, and ensuring proper storage of materials.
- Provide accurate and timely communication of results to clients and internal teams.
- Conduct research and development to improve laboratory procedures and expand service capabilities.
- Train new staff and ensure ongoing development of technical skills across the team.
- Coordinate with field teams to ensure proper sample collection and handling protocols.
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and databases for sample tracking and reporting.
- Participate in internal audits and external inspections; lead corrective actions as needed.
- Develop and implement safety protocols; serve as a point of contact for lab safety compliance.
- Support digital integration of lab data with client platforms and internal systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong background in chemistry and microbiology.
- Proven leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and laboratory information systems.
- Ability to work with potentially hazardous materials and maintain safety standards.
- Flexibility to work overtime or adjust schedule as needed.
Training and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Microbiology, Chemistry, or related discipline) or equivalent experience.
- NELAP certification or equivalent required; HACCP certification preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of laboratory experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements:
- Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, talk, and perform repetitive motions.
- Must be able to lift over 50 pounds occasionally and over 20 pounds frequently.
