About the Department
The Department of Education & Early Learning’s (DEEL) mission is to ensure that all Seattle children have the greatest opportunity to succeed in school and in life, ultimately helping scholars graduate from school, ready for college and a career. As part of this mission, DEEL is hosting the Upward Bound program. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance and graduation. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to prepare students for the next academic year and increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
We are looking for a part-time Math Tutor to support the Upward Bound Program in Seattle through the end of the academic school year, starting in early December, 2025 and ending June, 2026. This assignment may be extended through the summer Upward Bound program, if you are interested and available
In this role, you will be responsible for mentoring, tutoring, and providing instructional aid to support 9th - 12th grade students enrolled in the program at Rainier Beach and Garfield High School. You will work with the Academic Youth Counselor, mentoring students facing educational barriers to progress through the academic pathway so they may succeed in high school and beyond. This position will provide you with the opportunity to build leadership skills and gain experience in working with diverse youth from underserved communities.

Position Duties
Here's what you’ll be doing to support the Upward Bound program:
- Providing one-to-one or small group tutoring to 9th-12th grade students in Math (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus)
- Supporting leadership development, college and career readiness, goal setting, career exploration and life skills by developing and conducting workshops remotely or in person
- Maintaining accurate records of tutoring and workshop activities by students and volunteers
You will be most successful in this role with a combination of the following:
Experience:
- Working in one or more the following math skills area (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus)
- As a successful Upward Bound program participant or participant in a similar program that understands and can support students in developing the skills and knowledge for success in achieving personal, postsecondary, and career goals
- Developing workshops that will support students in gaining academic and life skills to succeed in high school, transition to postsecondary, graduate from college, and transition into a career
Skills and Abilities:
- Responsible
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
Minimum Qualifications
In addition to the qualities mentioned above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications (or a combination of education, training or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class):
- An Associate’s Degree
OR
- Equivalent of two years of college-level coursework
Other Qualifications
This temporary non-benefits eligible position is eligible for overtime and classified as a Youth Supervisor 1 and will be expected to last through the academic school year, beginning in early December, 2025 and ending in June, 2026.
The pay rate for this position is $24.01 - $24.01 per hour. Employees will be given premium pay in lieu of benefits.
The Upward Bound program will take place in person at Garfield and Rainier Beach High Schools. The tutor is expected to work Monday through Thursday, 2:30 pm – 6:00 p.m. onsite at Garfield High School Monday and Tuesday and onsite at Rainier Beach on Wednesday and Thursday. The total time commitment is 14 hours per week.
Hiring Timeline: Interviews for this temporary position are tentatively schedule for the week of November 17, 2025.
