Under the supervision of the Director of Spiritual Care, the Supervisor of Chaplains utilizes management skills and knowledge of state and CMS Hospice regulations to facilitate the provision of spiritual care for patients and families in hospice care, with emphasis on patient/family satisfaction and overall results. This position supervises chaplains across multiple locations and provides ongoing support, coaching and feedback.
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supports and practices the Empath Health mission, vision, and values on a consistent basis.
2. In partnership with the Spiritual Care Director, screens, interviews and hires qualified chaplains.
3. Work with clinical mentor for newly hired spiritual chaplains to ensure the orientation competencies are completed and the new colleague is equipped to succeed in their role
4. Ensure that discipline specific documentation training and support with EMR is provided.
5. Provide ongoing supervision and support to chaplains reporting to them.
6. Serve as primary resource for staff retention.
7. Assist in the resolution of personnel issues, worker’s compensation claims, and liability issues.
8. Evaluate direct reports in a fair and timely fashion.
9. Serve as a resource for continuing education and needed coaching to optimize performance.
10. Assist in the development and implementation of staffing patterns to ensure coverage.
11. Complete annual Tracer visits and Triennial competency checks as determined by the organization.
12. Ensure compliance with completion of annual education and vaccine requirements
13. Conduct chart audits and address documentation concerns
14. Plan and implement continuing education and discipline support activities
15. Plan and facilitate monthly discipline meeting.
16. Collaborate and communicate with Team leadership on integration of the chaplain on the team.
17. Manage and maintain appropriate staffing, including ensuring coverage for call offs and planned PTO and developing and overseeing weekend on call rotations.
18. Monitor patient/family and employee satisfaction levels and take steps to assure optimal experiences.
19. Monitor staff effectiveness, productivity and act to remedy variances.
20. Participate in continuous quality improvement projects and focus groups to maintain the highest standards of quality care.
21. Be accessible and visible to colleagues.
22. Participate in the planning and implementation of Community Memorial Services and Remembering Our Own services as well as other employee support activities.
23. Other duties as requested.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
• Education and/or Experience: Graduate theological education from an accredited institution of higher learning or equivalent level of preparation as required by faith group affiliation.
• Authorization from faith community for the performance of sacerdotal functions in the exercise of his or her ministry. (At time of hire or within six months.)
• Two to four units of Clinical Pastoral Education or equivalent as required by certifying body.
• Board Certification from one of the established accrediting bodies for professional chaplaincy such as APC, NACC, NAJC and SCA.
• Previous experience in spiritual leadership in an interfaith setting. Ability to take a leadership role in change management and conflict resolution.
• Prior supervisory experience preferred.
• Compassion for and understanding of ministry to the terminally ill, their caregivers and families.
• Sufficient spiritual and emotional maturity to understand and exhibit healthy professional boundaries when working with a highly vulnerable population.
• Ability to work collaboratively with team leadership to ensure the integration of spiritual care on the team level.
• Ability to be an educator, advocate and resource for spiritual care with teams, and in the organization and community.
• Excellent computer skills and ability to be proficient in and provide education and training on a variety of technology and programs used in the care of our patients and families.
• Must have reliable transportation which will enable them to perform tasks and responsibilities in a timely and appropriate fashion. Must be able to provide proof of automobile insurance, a copy of which will be placed in their employee file. Travel between multiple locations is required.
