As a Lead Network Engineer, you will drive the delivery of critical infrastructure capabilities across the enterprise, guiding cross-functional teams through high-impact projects. You will bring clarity to ambiguity, structure to complexity, and execute with precision and confidence. This role demands a strategic thinker with deep technical expertise, capable of owning the full lifecycle of infrastructure initiatives—from ideation and architecture through implementation and operational handoff.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:
Research, Design, and Engineering

  • Coordinate long term network architecture planning for services across the network portfolio.
  • Develops short- and long-term planning to meet network requirements.
  • Coordinate efforts to establish and review network architecture, standards, and best practices for network design and implementation.
  • Collaborate on existing automation tools and develop new automation to support production network changes.
  • Produce design documents capable of explaining existing or proposed network, automation, and system implementations
  • Anticipate changes and issues with existing network services to proactively design implement solutions before they impact services
  • Coordinate and develops network reference architectures.

Professional Development

  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Cross training of peers, fellow team members, and possibly junior level technicians.
  • Ability to present technical briefings at all levels of organization.

Monitoring and Analysis

  • Monitor network usage, anticipate problems and suggest solutions.
  • Identify issues with network management tools (DataDog, Splunk, others as needed).
  • Analyze network activity and network problems to discover and prevent systemic problems.
  • Reporting network operational status by gathering and prioritizing data.

Incident Escalation and Troubleshooting

  • Provide Tier III escalation support  of network service incidents to diagnose problems and resolve time-critical issues.
  • Take part in 24-7 on call rotation.
  • Gather data to support root cause investigation of outages.

Project Support and Documentation

  • Document architectures, processes, as-builts, projects, standards, and root cause analyses both in text and diagram form.
  • Contribute to the formulation and implementation of installation standards and procedures.
  • Evaluate services provided by vendors and recommends changes.
  • Manages projects under supervision.

Vendor Management

  • Evaluate vendor solutions and provides recommendations on current and future project support/scope.

Summary of Experience (6-8 years+):

General

  • Ability to analyze and interpret packet captures.
  • Full-time experience with medium to large scale Retail Networks (4+ yrs).
  • IT customer support and service (6+ yrs).

Cloud

  • Solid understanding of cloud networking concepts including ExpressRoute, DirectConnect, VWan, Cloud WAN.
  • Ability to work within Azure and AWS for deployment and support of IaaS/PaaS solutions.

Routing and Switching

  • Subject matter expert BGP experience both on the edge and internally across all device types.
  • Solid Network CLI experience for break-fix scenarios when needed.
  • Experience with TCP/IP, routing/switching concepts, and common routing protocols.

Security

  • Firewall experience including stateless filtering, NAT, and stateful inspection (3+ yrs).
  • Experience with PaloAlto firewalls in both Active/Standby and Active/Active.

Load Balancing and Proxy Services

  • Understanding of DNS based load balancing deploying active/standby and active/active devices.
  • Working experience with F5 load balancers.
  • Familiarity with application gateways (Azure, AWS, k8s).

IPAM

  • Familiarity with Infoblox, Bloxone and alternatives.
  • Solid understanding of distributed DNS deployments and hierarchy.
  • Ability to deploy and troubleshoot DHCP services.

Virtualization and Server Platform

  • Able to collaborate closely with Compute teams employing vMWare, Openstack and k8s based deployments.
  • Basic to intermediate ability to administer and troubleshoot Linux systems.

Data Center

  • Demonstrated experience with EVPN VXLAN spine/leaf architectures (3+ yrs).
  • Demonstrated understanding of different methods of compute attachment to DC networking equipment (multi-homing, single vlan, routing to the host).

Software Development

  • Ability to read, understand, and contribute to existing solutions using Python and Terraform (3+ yrs). 
  • Comfortable interacting with REST APIs.
  • Able to utilize Git.

Education and Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical and computer engineering, or equivalent experience in network systems and technology.
  • CCNP/CCIE level certification or equivalent experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Problem Solving and Network Troubleshooting

  • Advanced knowledge of Cisco IOS, Arista EOS, and Palo Alto with hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting router, switch, and firewall deployments.

 

Routing, Switching, and Security

  • Advanced knowledge of standard networking protocols including VXLAN, TCP/IP, DNS, BGP, GRE and OSPF, and IPSEC for use in VPN implementations.
  • Knowledge proficiency with Cisco IOS and NX-OS, Arista EOS, and PAN-OS with hands-on experience configuring routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Ability to configure and support load balancers (F5/Avi) and proxy servers.

 

Network Design, Implementation, and Observability

  • Design and implement configuration solutions to meet customer requests.
  • Configure network hardware based on templates and networking best practices.
  • Implement network performance improvements based on understanding of network trends and patterns.
  • Build and maintain configuration templates guided by reference architectures and networking best practices.
     
  • Create tooling and correlate data from network instrumentation.

Communication and Intrapersonal Skills

  • Verbal and written skills reflecting an ability to express oneself clearly and articulately. 
  • Fluency in technical terms relevant to networking.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to employ patience and empathy while dealing with conflict or differing viewpoints.
