(NON-EXEMPT)
Position Title: Rental Skate Sharpener
Position Characteristics: Non-seasonal and/or seasonal, part-time, no benefits.
Weekdays, evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, holidays.
Department: Recreation and Fitness

Position Purpose:
Responsible for sharpening rental hockey and rental figure skates for the ice arena. Follows safety protocols when operating skate sharpening machine. Wears required protective equipment for both ears and eyes when operating skate sharpener. Keeps log of sharpened skates. Ensures that skates are sharpened two times per year. Appropriately secures skate sharpening machine when not in use.
Nature and Scope:
The position requires knowledge on how to accurately and safely sharpen rental figure and rental hockey skates. The rental skates are owned by the recreation center and utilized during public skate sessions. Training for the position should come from a well-educated and trained sharpening professional supplied by a reputable organization, or supplied from an approved, previously trained, internal staff member. Training should be provided on proper and safe sharpening techniques, and safety procedures while operating the skate sharpening machine.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties:
- Assume responsibility for attending the Service Area’s skate sharpening trainings previous prior to independent skate sharpening.
- Trains with a well-educated and trained skate sharpener on proper techniques and safety procedures.
- Assume responsibility for sharpening rental skates.
- Ensures that accuracy and efficiency are prioritized while sharpening skates.
- Wears eye and ear protection while sharpening skates.
- Wear other PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) while sharpening, as necessary.
- Assume responsibility for effectively tracking and recording sharpened skates in a log.
- Documents sharpened skates in skate log at each shift.
- Records sharpened skates in real time.
- Does not retroactively record sharpened skates.
- Assume responsibility for maintaining effective communication between self and the Recreation Coordinator and Recreation and Fitness Manager.
- Reports problems with skates or skate sharpener to recreation coordinator.
- Attend and participate in meetings as required. Complete required paperwork.
- Assume responsibility for ensuring that no unauthorized or untrained staff operate the skate sharpener during skate sharpener’s assigned shift.
Performance Measurements:
- Skates are sharpened ideally, two times per calendar year.
- After appropriate training, effectively sharpen 4-8 pairs per hour.
- Ensures skate log record is neat and up-to-date.
- Attends shifts as assigned and is on time for a shifts.
- Attends all required skate sharpening trainings as assigned.
- Exhibits safe behavior while operating skate sharpening machine, including wearing PPE, appropriately operating the skate sharpening machine within specifications, and correctly turning off and securing skate sharpening machine.
- Ensures that untrained staff members do not have access to skate sharpening machine while in use.
Qualifications:
Training/Education/Certification:
- 18 years of age or older
- High School Diploma
- Valid Driver’s License
- A copy of their Motor Vehicle Record to be provided prior to employment.
- Approved Criminal Background Investigation
Required Knowledge:
- Training in proper skate sharpening techniques, provided by the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center
- Understanding of proper record keeping
- Understanding of safety procedures regarding skate sharpening
Experience Required:
- None previous to employment
Skills/Abilities:
- Attentive to detail.
- Able to follow directions and work well independently.
- Ability to work day, weekends and/or evenings.
- Ability to use utilize training in the manner it was provided
Physical Activities and Requirements of this Position:
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Standing: For extended time periods.
Walking: Especially for short distances.
Lifting: Moving items to and fro.
Grasping: Using fingers and palm on an object.
Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
Seeing: Average, ordinary, vision acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate machinery.
Physical Strength: Medium work, exerts up to 20 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and 10 lbs. constantly.
Working Conditions:
- Worker subject to colder than average indoor temperatures, due to location in the ice arena lobby.
- Must work with the skate sharpening machine, which is considered heavy machinery.
- Must work in very noisy environment requiring workers to shout to communicate.
- Frequent standing.
- Frequent use of fine motor skills.
