Job Description
This position assists in the development and implementation of health physics and radiation protection programs, processes and/or systems, as necessary, for the plant operations to protect the radiological health and safety of workers and members of the public, and to control radiological effluent releases. This includes creating, documenting, and managing the technical and regulatory requirements of radiological design and safety programs. This role also assists in the technical development and implementation of engineering and program specific administrative procedures while ensuring they conform to all technical, regulatory, and internal program requirements.
Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities:
- Develop occupational radiation protection practices and ALARA program requirements for a first of its kind reactor or nuclear fuel fabrication facility.
- Assist with the establishing a radiation safety program to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by local, state, and federal agencies, including the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and State Laws.
- Evaluate and analyze radiological health hazards, or remediation of either byproduct, source or special nuclear material.
- Collaborate and communicate with key stakeholders in project leadership and across the team to provide frequent updates on progress of projects, maintain the correct order of priorities and ability to adapt to change, and raise concerns when there are problems with projects and/or timelines.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
- Contribute to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; deal with changing priorities and differing situations and make decisions that may affect the work of the team.
- Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conduct technical studies; complete routine technical projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces.
- TRISO role:
- Develop/implement radiation safety programs and procedures, including but not limited to: ALARA, respiratory protection, internal and external dosimetry, air sampling and monitoring, contamination control, radiological surveys and monitoring (including instrument selection and maintenance), radiation work permitting, and environmental monitoring.
- Perform hazard assessments and define job safety requirements in work permits.
- Participate in Process Hazards Analysis activities with multidiscipline teams to identify potential criticality, radiological, chemical, and fire/explosion hazards and determine potential consequence levels to support the Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA) process.
- Consult with and advise operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel on the radiation protection or occupational safety and health impacts of new or proposed changes to processes, procedures, and facility designs/modifications.
- Participate in design reviews.
- Conduct surveillances, inspections, walk-downs, investigations, and audits/assessments of radiological material operations and unusual incidents to ensure compliance with approved procedures and safety bases.
- Review and audit the safety and health programs for adequacy, compliance, and effectiveness.
- Develop Health Physics/Health & Safety Technician Training and Qualification Plan and train employees.
- Develop/deliver radiation safety training for all personnel.
- Develop/revise safety postings and operator aids to implement administrative controls to ensure they are unambiguous, easily understood, and readily achievable.
- Prepare and deliver recommendations to managers, safety committee representatives, and employees.
- Provide support to the emergency response team.
- Maintain professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication.
- Execute the core tasks and responsibilities, listed above, with minimal supervision.
- Provide ownership, responsibility, and accountability over technical scope involving the coordination of multiple individual contributors working in a specific area.
- Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Job Profile Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in science (health physics, biology, etc.) and/or engineering (nuclear, chemical, mechanical, etc.) from an accredited college or university required.
- Typically, Level I - 0 years (entry level), Level II - 3 years, Level III - 5 years of experience in the health physics / radiation safety field.
- A master’s degree in science/engineering or related field (may include a combination of experience obtained through an academic institution, e.g., design projects, research, or design teams, as well as professional experience) may be in lieu of two years of experience.
- A Ph.D. in science/engineering or related field (may include a combination of experience obtained through an academic institution, e.g., design projects, research, or design teams, as well as professional experience) may be in lieu of three years of experience.
- Previous experience at X-energy meeting performance standards may be in lieu of years of experience.
- Knowledge of the principles, theories and practices in the field of health physics and radiation safety, and in the implementation of programs associated with the use of byproduct, source or special nuclear materials in the areas of power reactor, nuclear fuel fabrication, medical, industrial, academic, decommissioning (material use or reactor operations), and/or Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSIs).

Compensation
