Job Goal: To provide support to teachers, counselors, school administrators, and related service providers in providing therapeutic, behavioral support to students in order to fully access their instruction.

 

Qualifications:

 

  1. A degree in the mental health or counseling field.
  2. Alabama State Department of Education Counseling Certificate is recommended.
  3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  4. Possess appropriate experience (at least three years) working with students, preferably in an educational setting.

Reports To: Coordinator of Security and Emergency Management

 

Background Check Required:( Ala. Code §§ 16-22A-5 ) Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

 

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

 

  1. Skills in the use of oral and written language in order to present ideas simply and clearly to students, their parents, and school staff.
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of principles, concepts, and skills in the field of mental health.
  3. Comprehensive knowledge of principles, concepts and skills relating to the instruction of social skills and its implementation.
  4. Ability to create interest through the use of materials, techniques, and methods appropriate to the varying abilities and backgrounds of individual students.
  5. Skills in individual and group counseling for the purpose of identifying and assisting students and their mental health needs.
  6. Possesses the physical and emotional stability to fulfill the contract period.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Counsel small groups of students.
  2. Conducts structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions to meet the identified needs of students. Provides individual assistance to students to support mental health wellness including coping skills, building resilience, and improving problem-solving skills.
  3. Consults and collaborates with teachers, staff, and parents in understanding and meeting the needs of students.
  4. Provides community resources to parents to help meet the needs of their children in the areas of coping skills, building resilience, problem solving skills, and other areas of  mental health and behavior.
  5. Cooperates and collaborates with other professionals in enhancing the education of students. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with school and district level staff.
  6. Supports students and staff by participating in Suicide Assessments and Threat Assessments. Consults and supports school staff on needed outcomes for these assessments to support students.
  7. Help to identify at-risk students and work with school staff on tracking and supporting these students.
  8. Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities as required or assigned.
  9. Models appropriate personal characteristics and work habits that are consistent with personal development goals established for students.
  10. Performs other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned.

 

  • This position will be subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Madison City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by transfer of a qualified applicant who is already employed by Madison City Schools.
  • Under the Students First Act of 2011, no credit toward tenure or non-probationary status is earned in the initial school year of employment if the date of hire occurs after September 30.

 

Expected Employment: 202 days (full year)

Evaluation: According to established Board policies and administrative procedures and guidelines. Salary Range: (Salary based on employment for complete year)
