We’re looking for a Project Engineer with strong experience in bridge and transportation structure inspection, design, and project leadership. This is an exciting opportunity for a professional who enjoys blending technical depth with mentoring and client interaction.

The ideal candidate will have experience in structural inspections and project management who can bring creative problem-solving skills balanced with a strong background in the field. This position requires the ability to manage projects, liaise with clients and government agencies, and direct teams. This position is a mix of office and fieldwork with some local travel. We offer plenty of opportunities for growth, working with professionals who have decades of experience developing industry-defining techniques. The Project Engineer is responsible for assisting in the successful completion of inspection and design projects as well as leading inspection teams.  

 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as a technical leader – balancing design, inspection, and project management responsibilities across a variety of transportation and infrastructure projects.
  • Lead and provide quality oversight for bridge and ancillary structure inspections.
  • Review, analyze, and resolve field or design issues with innovative, constructible solutions.
  • Guide the planning and execution of inspection programs and structural evaluations.
  • Oversee and review inspection reports, repair recommendations, and load rating calculations.
  • Support design of bridges, retaining walls, and waterfront structures, as well as rehabilitation projects.
  • Manage engineering projects of varying size and complexity, from scope development through completion.
  • Coordinate schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure timely, high-quality outcomes.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for clients and agency representatives.
  • Assist with proposal development, cost estimating, and pursuit strategy.
  • Lead inspection and design teams, providing guidance and coaching to engineers and technicians.
  • Foster a culture of safety, innovation, and collaboration across all project phases.
  • Share expertise with colleagues through training, technical discussions, and mentorship.
  • Engage with clients and partners to identify opportunities for new or expanded services.
  • Participate in professional societies and industry events to promote Collins’ presence in the field.

Qualifications


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited program.
  • 5+ years of progressive structural engineering experience, including bridge or ancillary structure inspection.
  • Strong understanding of VDOT and FHWA standards and inspection protocols.
  • Experience in inspection report writing, data management systems, and bridge design principles.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) required.
  • Completion of FHWA-NHI-130055 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges course preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for field assignments.
