Senior RMR Sales Engineer

Job Description

Senior RMR Sales Engineer

As a subsidiary of Toyota Industries (TICO), Vanderlande North America is enjoying rapid growth and extraordinary market demand. Vanderlande is a global market leader in material handling system manufacture, design, installation, and service. Vanderlande systems employ the latest in robotic, mechanical, and software technology. Vanderlande’s customers are household names in e-commerce, package delivery, and air transportation.

As part of the Parcel Services team, it is your responsibility to work collaboratively with the Director of Parcel Services, Sales Managers, and customers to identify and analyze any Revision, Modification and Retrofit (RMR) needs, and transfer those into a successful system design with appropriate options and tradeoffs identified.

Beyond initial design, you will support solution validation, cost estimation, and lifecycle planning to ensure long-term system performance and customer satisfaction. You will also serve as an internal project coordinator, supporting project managers in planning and executing sold projects by aligning engineering, procurement, and field service activities, tracking progress, and proactively addressing risks or resource needs.

You will present these designs to the customer, further fostering engagement, guiding technical discussions, and helping them make informed decisions as to the correct solution. You will report to the Director of Parcel Services.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and analyze customer automation needs through RFP reviews, data analysis, and collaborative discussions with sales managers and customers.
  • Independently develop system designs for RMR projects, managing the process from concept through final design documentation.
  • Evaluate multiple solution options to resolve technical challenges, balancing cost, functionality, operational requirements, and long-term maintainability.
  • Assess design and execution risks, develop mitigation strategies, and ensure that proposed solutions align with business and customer objectives.
  • Collaborate with the layout engineering group to translate system concepts into detailed, functional layouts.
  • Coordinate bid activities within the sales design team, ensuring deliverables, cost inputs, and documentation are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Support the pricing process by developing cost estimates and reviewing financial assumptions for accuracy and competitiveness.
  • Prepare proposal documents and assist the sales manager in technical presentations, providing clear and confident communication of system concepts and trade-offs.
  • Act as an internal project coordinator by supporting project managers during planning and handover, helping to align engineering, procurement, and field service activities.
  • Manage multiple concurrent sales projects effectively, maintaining organized documentation and consistent communication across all stakeholders.
  • Support project coordination activities during the solution development phase (up to 20% of total workload), ensuring smooth planning, documentation, and stakeholder alignment before handoff to the main Project Manager

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Mechatronics Engineering (or equivalent technical field). Master’s degree in engineering or business preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in automation, material handling, or parcel/logistics system design.
  • Proven ability to develop system concepts, cost estimates, and proposals for projects of varying complexity.
  • Working knowledge of project planning, risk assessment, and cross-functional coordination.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to engage both technical and business stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively in an entrepreneurial, international organization, collaborating across organizational, geographic, and cultural boundaries.
  • Prepared to travel up to 25% domestically and internationally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Spanish, with the ability to communicate effectively across multilingual teams and customer groups.
  • Experience with logistical processes and system design is preferred.
  • Familiarity with parcel automation technologies, including conveyors, sorters, and control systems.
  • Experience supporting project managers through planning, handover, and execution phases.
  • Exposure to simulation or modeling tools is an asset.
  • Solid understanding of lifecycle service solutions, reliability, and performance optimization principles.
