BASIC PURPOSE: The Vessel Tracking Analyst plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of vessel movement data that supports trading, analytics, and operations. This position involves validating and refining data sourced from a subscribed third-party provider, ensuring consistency with internal systems and business objectives. The analyst serves as a bridge between trading desks, analytics teams, and technical stakeholders—driving data integrity, process efficiency, and continuous improvement. A strong attention to detail and a structured, analytical mindset are essential for success in this role.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ownership & System Stewardship
- Serve as a co-owner of the Ship Tracking application, ensuring data accuracy, system reliability, and alignment with business objectives.
- Partner with data engineering and analytics teams to design and implement system enhancements, including automation of vessel entries and integration of predictive data feeds.
- Maintain and enhance the Sigma Computing environment and related dashboards to ensure consistent, high-quality access to actionable insights.
- Contribute to a sustainable support model through thorough documentation, team training, and the development of a shared knowledge base.
Operational Support & Data Quality
- Perform daily vessel tracking, confirming destinations, onboard products, and voyage statuses with meticulous attention to detail.
- Troubleshoot and resolve data quality issues related to subregion mapping, predictive logic, and feed inconsistencies from third-party data providers.
- Collaborate with analytics teams to verify data transformations and ensure alignment between raw and processed datasets.
- Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and automate repetitive processes to enhance efficiency and reduce manual effort.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Act as a key liaison between trading analysts, operations, data engineers, and business leaders to ensure tracking data supports decision-making needs.
- Translate business requirements into technical enhancements and communicate changes clearly across teams.
Maintain documentation for workflows, enhancement requests, and troubleshooting procedures to ensure transparency, accountability, and operational continuity.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Business, Data Analytics, Engineering, or a related field.
Experience:
- Familiarity with shipping data, vessel tracking systems, and energy commodities (crude oil, refined products, etc.) is a plus.
- Demonstrated initiative in identifying process gaps and proposing scalable, long-term solutions.
SKILLS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

- Highly detail-oriented, with a strong commitment to data accuracy and quality control.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate data anomalies and develop corrective actions.
- Proficiency with spreadsheets, databases, and data visualization tools (Sigma Computing and Snowflake Database knowledge preferred).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and business teams.
Typical Physical Demands:
- Requires prolonged sitting, some bending and stooping.
- Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
- Requires normal range of hearing and vision.
