The Tax Manager is primarily responsible for managing income taxation (federal and state), fixed assets, and property taxation. Reporting to the Vice President of Tax, some of the key duties for this position involve the planning and researching of federal and state income tax issues, supervising the adherence to policy and procedure for fixed assets, and working with support personnel to maintain Yardi real property tax module to track parcels, tax payments, assessed values, and special assessments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TASKS:
Income Taxation (Federal and State)
- Planning and researching of federal and state income tax issues.
- Structure and document transactions to maximize tax objectives.
- Assist with tax compliance, budgeting, projections, audits and examination as needed.
- Prepare and review estimated payments and deposits.
- Oversee aspects of state & local income tax compliance for the business & owners.
Fixed Assets
- Supervise the adherence to policy and procedure of fixed assets.
- Assure compliance in an evolving environment.
- Review classification of capital expenditures to maximize tax benefits in adherence with the tangible property regulations.
- Work closely with development team on new construction projects to review and classify costs appropriately for tax depreciation purposes.
- Supervise the maintenance of the depreciation system within book, state, federal and alternative minimum tax requirements. Review depreciation workpapers related to tax return preparation.
- Provide periodic training to property accountants on fixed asset job closures and address questions as needed.
- Oversee and review construction period interest and property tax capitalization.
- Coordinate and oversee cost-segregation studies on new property acquisitions.
Property Taxation
- Work with support personnel to maintain Yardi real property tax module to track parcels, tax payments, assessed values, and special assessments.
- Adress inquiries from property managers related to real property taxes & special assessments.
- Work with outside parties to manage the real property tax appeal process and keep management apprised of appeals.
- Advise acquisitions group on real property transfer taxes and reassessments as requested.
- Review and file all required personal property tax returns.
- Respond all tax inquiries and audits from the various taxing jurisdictions related to all property taxes.
- Prepare accurate forecasts for all state and local tax obligations, including real property taxes.
- Forecast property tax assessments in connection with the companywide budgeting process.
- Other duties as assigned by manager.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Minimum 6 years of public accounting or related experience.
- Experience in partnership, corporate and property taxation is necessary, preferably with a focus in commercial real estate.
- Experience in individual taxation is a plus.
- Public accounting experience should include tax compliance and advanced research skills.
- Critical and analytical thinking.
- Ability to identify and pursue alternative solutions.
- Can organize complex facts or data into manageable form.
- Ability to identify and implement tax planning strategies.
- Application and theoretical knowledge of accounting and tax systems.
- Proficient in Windows based environment (MS Word, Excel).
- Knowledgeable and experienced in software-based tax compliance systems.
- Very proficient in Excel.
- Experience with Yardi or FAS depreciation software is a plus.
- Ability to effectively present ideas and clearly communicate strategies.
- Strong organizational skills.

EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business or finance.
- Graduate degree in taxation or accounting a definite plus.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE REQUIRED:
- CPA Certificate.
- Valid Driver License and registered automobile.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
