The Opportunity:

As a Grounds and Nursery Specialist 3, you’ll take the lead in keeping the WSU Spokane Campus grounds clean, attractive, and well-maintained. You’ll supervise and work alongside a dedicated team, using your skills to ensure our campus environment thrives year-round.

Summary of Duties:

  • Lead and perform a variety of skilled landscaping and groundskeeping tasks to maintain a safe and welcoming campus.

  • Take charge of installing, operating, and maintaining our computerized irrigation systems to keep our green spaces healthy and vibrant.

  • Operate and maintain a wide range of motorized grounds equipment and tools, ensuring everything runs smoothly and safely.

  • Oversee equipment maintenance and manage surplus inventory collection and storage.

  • Play a key role in snow removal operations to keep our campus accessible during winter months.

  • Monitor plant and tree health, inspect for signs of disease or pest damage, and recommend removal or replacement when necessary.

Additional Information:

This is a full (100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime eligible.

Monthly Salary:

$3,417 to $4,542 | Range 38 (Steps A-M) | Successful candidates are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school or equivalent and at least two (2) years experience working with youth, gardening, or in grounds maintenance; OR equivalent education/experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working with equipment required for grounds maintenance activities.

  • Physical ability to do the work.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.

  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.

  • Ability to use a variety of hand and motorized tools such as; pruners, loppers, shovels, rakes, hoes, mowers, blowers, edgers, litter picker, chainsaw, trimmers, string trimmer and sprayers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working with computerized irrigation systems.

  • Demonstrated experience with personal computers used to control computerized irrigation software programs.
