About the Department
General Responsibilities:
Responsible for assisting with and implementing special education instructional programs, specifically dealing with transition. Responsible for providing direct service to students with disabilities.
Essential Duties:

- Facilitates transition programming (administers career skill and interest inventories, conducts career exploration activities, and provides vocational programming) for students who are eligible for special education services and for whom the IEP team has established transition goals and objectives.
- Coordinates school and community work-based learning opportunities.
- Act as liaison between the school and community agencies to coordinate the transition of students with disabilities from school to the community and post-secondary options
- Provide technical assistance to special education teachers in assigned schools to support skills taught in the school setting are relevant to the work setting;
- Assist in reviewing the development and implementation of individualized educational programs (IEPs) in assigned schools to support LRE; this includes data collection and progress reporting.
- Assist with planning, coordinating, and conducting professional development for teachers, principals, and the community in the area of transition
- Contribute to the referral process for PERT
- Conduct, analyze and report on follow-up surveys required for the Virginia Department of Education Indicator 14 Report.
- Assist with Virginia Alternate Assessments as assigned
- Conduct situational assessments with students in the community to ascertain employment interest and aptitude
- Attends administrative meetings and work sessions as required, and attends professional seminars, conferences, and workshops as required by the position.
- Serves as a resource to families, parents, and students in accessing transition services as well as providing information about transition topics.
Position Duties
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must have at least three years of successful full-time teaching experience in the area of transition or secondary education for students with disabilities. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of transition programming and processes for students with disabilities at the secondary level. Excellent written and oral communication skills are needed; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to be effective in helping students learn.
Education and Experience:
A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Bachelor's Degree required with special education certification/licensure. Must have a record of successful full-time teaching experience. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred is prior experience in supporting transition services in a public school environment or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to be effective in helping students learn.
Minimum Qualifications
Work Schedule: 7.25 hours/day, 10 month (217 days)
Salary Scale: Teacher
FLSA Status: Exempt
Special Requirements: Must possess or be eligible for a valid VA Driver's License to transport students to/from community locations as needed

Physical Conditions:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Minimal ability for a wide range of motion to include climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and manipulating. May involve repetitive motions and long periods of sitting at a desk or computer and long periods of standing. May involve exposure to moderate weather conditions and includes indoor and outdoor work. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs without assistance.
