About the Department

Under limited supervision, the Commercial Driver License (CDL) Instructor delivers high-quality, federally regulated instruction to prepare students for successful completion of CDL certification and entry into commercial driving careers. This position provides classroom and behind-the-wheel training in compliance with FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) standards and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) regulations.
Position Duties
- Instructs students in all phases of CDL training, including classroom, range, and road instruction, in compliance with FMCSA and NCDMV regulations.
- Develops and implements lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments to support student learning and program outcomes.
- Evaluates student performance and provides feedback to ensure mastery of driving skills, safety standards, and federal/state compliance requirements.
- Supervises students during vehicle operation, enforcing safety procedures and maintaining compliance with DOT laws and College policies.
- Maintains accurate and timely documentation of student attendance, training hours, and progress for FMCSA reporting and College records.
- Coordinates vehicle inspections, maintenance, and repair to ensure training equipment is safe and operational.
- Oversees inventory and ordering of instructional materials, supplies, and equipment needed for daily instruction.
- Assists with scheduling and administering CDL testing in collaboration with NCDMV and approved testing partners.
- Advises and supports students on program requirements, career pathways, and certification processes to promote retention and completion.
- Participates in recruitment activities, community engagement, and industry partnerships to strengthen program visibility and outcomes.
- Maintains professional licensure and participates in professional development to remain current on FMCSA, NCDMV, and DOT regulations.
- Collaborates with the CDL Coordinator, Continuing Education leadership, and College departments to ensure program quality and alignment with institutional goals.

Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma; current Commercial Driver License (CDL) class A; Instructor’s license; five or more years of experience of over-the-road experience; NCDOT driving record required with clean driving record; Must possess a working knowledge of FMCA rules and requirements as well as NCDMV and NCDOT rules; Previous teaching experience with a FMSCA ELDT approved program.
Other Qualifications
Work Environment: Both classroom and outdoor training environments, including commercial driving ranges and public roadways; Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, vibration, exhaust fumes, and other elements consistent with a trucking and heavy equipment setting; requires strict adherence to all College, FMCSA, and NCDMV safety protocols to ensure a secure learning environment for students and staff; May occasionally include extended periods of standing, walking, or driving.
Physical Demands: Requires the ability to operate and maneuver large commercial vehicles and instructional equipment safely; Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and training materials; Requires sufficient visual acuity, hearing, and manual dexterity to inspect vehicles, operate machinery, and observe student performance; Must be able to pass the NC DOT physical and maintain medical certification as required for CDL licensure.
Normal Working Hours: This position requires a 40-hour workweek, with flexibility for weekday, evening, and weekend assignments based on class schedules and testing requirements; Hours may vary depending on student enrollment, weather conditions, or departmental needs; Occasional participation in recruitment events, professional development activities, and departmental meetings outside of standard hours may be required.
