Maui Island Mechanic Manager
1. Job Purpose/Objective:
The Maui Island Mechanic Manager oversees all maintenance operations for Robert’s Hawaii’s Maui-based fleet, including the Maui Bus Transit Mechanic Division. This position ensures that all vehicles and equipment are serviced, repaired, and maintained to the highest safety and reliability standards. The role includes leadership and operational oversight of shop personnel, coordination of fleet maintenance schedules, and compliance with all regulatory and company standards to support safe, efficient transit and charter operations island-wide.
2. Essential Job Functions:
Incumbent may perform any or all of the following:
- Lead & Oversight
- Lead, manage, and develop the Maui maintenance team, including the Maui Bus Transit Mechanic Division.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork within the workshop.
- Coordinate maintenance operations with other departments to meet service schedules and minimize downtime.
- Fleet Maintenance & Operations
- Plan, organize, and oversee all preventive and corrective maintenance for buses, fleet vehicles, and support equipment.
- Monitor fleet performance and reliability; prioritize and assign work orders to technicians daily.
- Inspect completed work to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with manufacturer and company standards.
- Manage unplanned repairs and emergency breakdowns to ensure rapid and efficient service response.
- Maintain accurate service and repair documentation; review daily work orders for completion and accuracy.
- Regulatory & Safety Compliance
- Ensure compliance with DOT, EPA, HIOSH, DOH, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Enforce safe work practices and environmental standards in the maintenance facility.
- Support vehicle inspections and audits to ensure readiness and legal compliance.
- Training & Development
- Train, mentor, and supervise technicians, emphasizing continuous skill development and ASE certification.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and performance evaluations for maintenance staff.
- Administrative & Cross-Island Support
- Coordinate with the Director of Maintenance and other island managers to share best practices and resources.
- Prepare maintenance reports, performance metrics, and recommendations for process improvements.
- Travel to neighboring islands as needed to provide operational or maintenance support.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
3. Essential Skills (Minimum qualifications individual must possess when entering position) – i.e. skillsets, education, certifications, etc.
- One year certifications from a college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 6 months to a year working experience in a fleet maintenance and/or shop environment
- Must be able to utilize diagnostic equipment / scanner – OBD, Pro-ling
- Able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest commissions, proportions, percentages, area , circumference and volume
- Able to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
- Able to speak, read, write English
- Must possess excellent communications skills (written / oral)
- Must have minimum five (5) years ASE certificates (e.g. Brakes, Suspension & Steering, Engines, Power-train (drive-line), Air Conditioning, Transmission, Engine Diagnosis, etc.) or Hawaii State Mechanic License
- Must have minimum Type 3 License and able to upgrade to CDL
- Must own hand-tools
- Operational knowledge of basic hand tools required
- Operational knowledge of basic shop equipment (e.g. vise, press, floor jacks, etc.) required
- Must be able to work flexible days / hours – weekends, nights, holidays
- Computer knowledge of basic programs essential – MS Word, Excel, email, etc.
- Able to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations
- Able to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals
- Have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public
- Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variable in situations where only limited standardization exits
- Able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
4. Working Conditions/Job Environment
- Medium to heavy work: Exerting up to 70 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
- Must have good manual dexterity which involves frequent bending, stooping, overhead reaching, kneeling, squatting and other physical demands
- Must be able to work in a repair shop environment where loud noises, exhaust fumes and chemicals are commonly present
- Must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and make fine discriminations in sound
- The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach; performing mechanical or skilled trade’s tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as mechanics, etc.
- The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals
- The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation
- The worker is subject to oils: There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
- Some remote work may be necessary
