A youth mentor with Family Support Unit (FSU) acts as a positive role model to guide young people toward personal growth and independence . The mentor builds a supportive, consistent relationship with at-risk youth, helping them navigate challenges, set goals, and connect with community resources. A core part of the role is maintaining appropriate boundaries while helping youth with life skills, emotional regulation, and educational goals.
• Relationship building: Establish and maintain a trusting and dependable relationship with assigned youth, providing companionship and emotional support.
• Case management and planning: Help youth identify and work toward goals by developing, implementing, and updating individual achievement or goal plans.
• Life skills development: Coach youth on a range of daily living skills, such as financial literacy, career readiness, and independent living skills for those transitioning out of foster care.
• Educational support: Assist with academic achievement, monitor school attendance and grades, and provide tutoring or homework help.
• Resource connection: Link youth and their families to necessary community resources, including social, health, and mental health services.
• Advocacy and collaboration: Act as a liaison between the youth, their family, school, and other agency staff. Attend meetings and court hearings to advocate for the youth's best interests.
• Crisis support: Assist with crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques when needed.
• Administrative tasks: Maintain accurate case notes, files, progress reports, and other documentation required by the agency.
• Actively Participates in staff meetings and treatment team meetings, offering relevant input and feedback and accepting such from the team
