Special Education Teacher
2025-2026 School Year (2 positions available)
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Special Education Teacher provides instruction, support, and resources to students with disabilities in alignment with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering standards-aligned instructional programs that help students achieve their full academic potential. This role requires collaboration with general education staff, counselors, administrators, and families to meet the diverse needs of students.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Supervisor of Special Education
COMPENSATION: Per the Carrollton Education Association Master Agreement. Years of teaching experience will be considered.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Responsible for planning and delivering instructional services that meet the educational goals and needs of special education students as determined by their IEP assigned to their caseload.
Responsible for timely coordination and monitoring of student initial and current IEP's meetings, including goals and objectives as well as classroom accommodations.
Ability to inform and work cooperatively with general education teachers, counselors, and administration.
Shall have a strong understanding of how to differentiate and individualize instruction, including positive behavior interventions and supports.
Ability to explain different disabilities and the impact on learning and serve as a resource for staff.
Ability to observe and assess a student's needs.
Ability to keep all student and parent information confidential.
Ability to keep a positive attitude in working with students, parents, other staff members, and community members who visit Carrollton Public Schools facilities or programs.
Must be self-directed and self-motivated.
Must be highly organized, and able to multi-task.
Display a high level of proficiency in Google Docs Programs including Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Classroom as well as Microsoft Office.
Serve as a member of a positive behavior support team as needed.
Shall be of good character with high moral and ethical values.
Work to ensure a safe environment for students at all times.
Attend conferences, workshops, and professional development as requested.
Meet and greet visitors in a positive, helpful manner.
Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job expectation.
Must act in a professional manner.
Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Valid 9-12 Michigan Teaching Certificate with Special Education certification (or ability to obtain temporary approval).
In-depth understanding of special education students, current special education law, and the IEP process.
Ability to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Demonstrated knowledge of differentiated instruction, positive behavior supports, and individualized learning strategies.
Strong organizational, planning, and multitasking skills.
Self-directed, highly motivated, and able to work independently.
High proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Classroom) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Commitment to fostering an inclusive, safe, and supportive educational environment.
Must satisfactorily pass:
Law enforcement background checks with fingerprinting.
Personal and professional reference background checks.
Satisfactory response to 4205-F Authorization for Release of Information and Employee History Check under 1996 PA 189 of 1996; MCL 380.1230b.
