The Department of Art and Art History in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Richmond invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Drawing and Interdisciplinary Practice in the Visual & Media Arts Practice program to begin in the 2026-2027 academic year.
We seek an artist and educator who is deeply connected to the discourses of contemporary art and is excited about the opportunity to shape new class offerings within a liberal arts institution . As a department, we take a broadly interdisciplinary view of what drawing can be, and we will therefore be attuned to how candidates define themselves as interdisciplinary artists, with drawing informing their practice and pedagogy. We seek candidates with the ability to teach both foundational drawing and courses with an experimental focus that may extend into areas such as animation, performance, sound, or installation. The ideal candidate will have an active studio practice, with the ability to teach courses at all levels of our curriculum, engage in departmental curriculum development, and have an interest in collaboration. All candidates should demonstrate a commitment to pedagogical projects and coursework that support an inclusive, diverse, and accessible experience for all students.
A Master of Fine Arts degree is required by the time of appointment.
Applicants should apply online at https://jobs.richmond.edu with the following documents:
- curriculum vitae
- cover letter
- teaching statement (1-2 pages)
- artist statement (1-2 pages)
- portfolio of creative work.
The portfolio should be received as a link to a pdf and contain no more than 20 images or slides. The teaching statement should detail the candidate’s teaching philosophy and commitment to educating a diverse student body through inclusive pedagogies. Candidates for this position may be asked, at a later date, to provide the names and contact information for three references who will be asked to submit letters of recommendation. Review of applications will commence December 15, 2025, and continue until the position is filled. Please contact Brittany Nelson at [email protected] with any questions.
