Compensation Range

The base pay scale for this position is $147,000.00 - $224,250.00. In addition, this position will be eligible for additional benefits consistent with the role. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be determined based on various factors, including but not limited to: scope of role, level of experience, education, accomplishments, internal equity, budget, and subject to Fair Market Value evaluation. The hiring range listed is a good faith determination of potential compensation at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.

What you will be doing

Director of Operational Excellence Transformation Lead

Operational Excellence (OE) at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is charged with optimizing quality, efficiency, and performance across the enterprise, enabling continued success for the organization and ensuring an optimal patient experience. The OE team thinks beyond what’s expected, from simplifying patient registration and decreasing operating room turnover time to streamlining the discharge process. The OE department is highly visible, collaborating closely with the HSS executive team and other clinical and business leaders throughout the organization. As a part of this team, you’ll be an essential resource, helping our hospital stay on top of our game, so we can ensure our patients do the same.

Job Summary:

The Director of Operational Excellence Transformation Lead is a healthcare leader responsible for executing the key transformation projects, overseeing high-impact C-suite strategic projects and driving enterprise-wide performance improvement. The Director will report directly to the Vice President of Operational Excellence & Operations.

The Director will own and drive projects to completion with specific tasks including but not limited to: development and presentation of leadership-ready materials, design of change management and communication plans, facilitation of discussions with multiple stakeholders, mentoring and training junior staff members, design and execution of analytics, and building complex models to inform decision-making and performance improvement. To this end, the Director will leverage analytical, strategic planning, project management, change management, and communication skills to ensure project success. It is a critical role to lead transformation vision, business value realization and executive engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

Transform for Tomorrow Execution

  • Lead successful execution of Transformation for Tomorrow, ensuring all initiatives are tracked to milestones, adhere to established timelines, and that robust finance realization tracking is in place to validate and report financial impact and value delivery.
  • Work collaboratively with Finance and IT teams to ensure accountability for deliverables, integrate financial and digital requirements into transformation initiatives, and proactively address operational, technical, and reporting dependencies impacting project success.
  • Act as primary liaison to executives, updating on progress, addressing risks, and ensuring best-practice sharing and scalability.

Special Projects & C-Suite Initiative Oversight

  • Serve as C-suite’s strategic execution partner, overseeing cross-functional, enterprise-scale initiatives.
  • Maintain a project portfolio view, balancing priorities, and reporting progress, risks, and impact directly to senior leadership.
  • Proactively identify new transformation opportunities with executive partners.
  • Exceptional ability to collaborate with, influence, and build partnerships among executive and senior leaders across Operations, Finance, IT, and clinical domains, ensuring transparency, alignment, and shared accountability for the delivery of major transformation initiatives.

Performance Improvement Leadership

  • Apply Lean, Six Sigma, and advanced improvement methodologies in all initiatives.
  • Build capability for continuous improvement through coaching, training, and analytics.

Communication & Change Management

  • Lead the development and delivery of change management strategies for critical transformations.
  • Own executive-level communications, stakeholder engagement plans, and reporting for critical projects.
  • Monitor adoption and adjust strategies to maximize sustainable change.

Education- Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA)
  • Advanced degree in public health, healthcare management, business administration or related field

Skills & Experience – Required: 

  • Advanced degree in public health, healthcare management, business administration or related field preferred.
  • Significant experience (8+ years) in operational excellence, performance improvement, and strategic program execution in healthcare or complex hospital systems.
  • Strong command of process improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, or similar) and enterprise project management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; effectively communicates with various departments to disseminate and receive information as requested
  • Experience designing impactful change management and communication programs
  • Working knowledge of various software and spreadsheet applications used in process mapping, process design, and work-flow management (e.g., MS Excel, MS PowerPoint)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines in an environment of constant change with a continuous improvement mindset
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to collaborate with both clinical and administrative stakeholders
  • Ability to influence people, build relationships and collaborate
  • Ability to produce high-quality deliverables in a consistent manner

Skills & Experience – Preferred

  • Experience in designing and implementing complex analyses, tailoring communication of findings to stakeholders
  • Experience in coaching junior team members through complex tasks, improving the quality of their deliverables, and being a trusted mentor to junior team members
  • Experience working in healthcare systems and hospitals, deep knowledge in hospital operations
  • Familiarity with Epic EMR
  • Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt
