About the Department

The Behavioral Health Department is actively recruiting for a Registered Nurse (County Classification: Mental Health Nurse II/III) to join our team at the Drug & Alcohol Services Clinic. This service location serves adults with substance use disorders, from mild to severe, and with co-occurring mental health disorders, from mild to moderate. Operating within the scope of the license and at the Drug and Alcohol Services clinic, the registered nurse meets with clientele during walk-in and pre-scheduled appointments to assess health status, including, but not limited to, withdrawal symptoms, and give recommendations for best patient care. This position is assigned to the Grover Beach clinic, and will provide periodic coverage at other clinics in the county as-needed.

Duties may include:

  • Work with the clinic's ACCESS team to provide services to clientele. The ACCESS team includes front desk clerical staff, Case Manager, Assessment Coordinator(s), and the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) staff.
  • Provide services to walk-ins; this may include Narcan (Naloxone) training, health screenings, such as blood pressure, weight, heart rate/pulse, oxygen, and other standard tests, TB testing, drug testing, etc.
  • Consult with the prescribing Nurse Practitioner about the need for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and the appropriate referrals, screening, assessments, and including injections of Naltrexone, if appropriate during the walk-in clinics.
  • Assess and conduct services in accordance with withdrawal protocols for substances. This may include transportation and coordination with emergency room, hospital, and jail medical staff.
  • Monitor client dosage and consult with the Nurse Practitioner for concerns of side effects, dosage changes, and medication changes. Conduct regular drug testing as needed.
  • Call in refills as directed and as often as needed without delay and to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
  • Assist with clients’ mental health issues, including crisis, medication referrals, psychotropic medication education, and refills as directed.
  • In compliance with HIPAA and 42CFR regulations, educate clients and their significant others on medical, health care, or behavioral health topics.
  • Maintain timely documentation in accordance with Medi-Cal standards, development of problem lists for clients, and accuracy is imperative.
  • Consult with and deliver presentations to both internal treatment teams and external community groups.
  • Participate in annual TB testing of staff and other immunization efforts and disaster response as mandated.

Position Duties

Education and Experience

Mental Health Nurse I: Either A: Two years of experience in a mental health setting; OR B: Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution in Nursing and one year experience in a mental health setting; OR C: Master's degree from an accredited institution in Psychiatric Nursing or Community Mental Health Nursing and no experience.

Mental Health Nurse II: Two years of experience as a Mental Health Nurse I, or a Mental Health Therapist II, or an equivalent position.

Mental Health Nurse III: Four years of experience as a Mental Health Nurse II, or a Mental Health Therapist III, or an equivalent position.

Licenses and Certificates

All levels: Valid California State License as a Registered Nurse.
