DESCRIPTION
The Resource Teacher, Environmental Education serves as a curriculum and instructional leader within the Office of Secondary Science, supporting the development and implementation of high-quality, standards-based science and environmental education across secondary schools. This 11-month position provides direct instructional coaching, mentoring for new teachers, and professional learning aligned with the Maryland Science Standards (MDSS), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and Maryland Environmental Literacy Standards. The position coordinates student environmental field experiences and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to promote equitable access to environmental and science education. The Environmental Education Resource Teacher contributes to curriculum design, resource development, and program evaluation, ensuring all students are engaged in inclusive, rigorous science learning that reflects current research and best practices.
This position has an anticipated start date during the current school year. Applicants currently employed with another Maryland public school system are responsible for verifying eligibility for release for this non-supervisory position if selected.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet all qualifications below to be considered for the vacancy.
Education:
Bachelors degree in Science such as Earth, Environmental, or Life Science.
Certification/Licensure:
Priority will be given to applicants who:
Hold a current Professional Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certificate/license in General Science Secondary Content Area 7-12 (Biology, Chemistry, Earth/Space Science, Environmental Science, Physical Science, Physics).
Applicants may be considered who:
Have completed all requirements to be eligible for a Professional Maryland State Department of Education certificate/license in the appropriate licensure area at the time of application.
Out-of-state applicants are strongly encouraged to begin the application process for educator licensure with the Maryland State Department of Education in addition to uploading all required materials to your HCPSS employment application.
Experience:
Three (3) years of teaching experience in Science at the secondary level in a PreK-12 setting.
One (1) year of experience with recent leadership duties, responsibilities, experience, and/or roles (e.g., Instructional Team Leader, School Improvement Team, school-based committees).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, curriculum development, or related field.
Experience in curriculum development, instructional coaching, or professional development facilitation.
Experience coordinating student field experiences, science events, and/or community partnerships in science.
Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas, Google Classroom, or Schoology to support curriculum delivery and professional development.
Experience integrating innovative teaching strategies and technology into science instruction.
Experience in analyzing student learning data to improve instruction and program effectiveness.
ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide guidance and mentorship to secondary science teachers across the district.
Support first-year science teachers through the Office of Professional Development mentorship program.
Facilitate inter-departmental collaboration and peer observations.
Develop, refine, and update science curriculum to align with district and state standards.
Research best practices to create instructional resources, strategies, and materials that support diverse learning needs.
Collaborate with the coordinator to plan and conduct professional learning sessions for science educators.
Organize workshops, conferences, and collaborative learning opportunities.
Provide ongoing instructional coaching and feedback to teachers.
Plan, coordinate, and oversee student field experiences and county-wide environmental education events.
Develop resources to support scientific and environmental literacy.
Collaborate with schools and community organizations to promote student science and environmental engagement.
Collect and analyze survey data to assess program effectiveness and areas for improvement.
Use data-driven insights to enhance instructional practices and professional development initiatives.
Serve as a liaison between teachers, administrators, and district leadership.
Advocate for equitable access to science and environmental education.
Communicate program goals and successes with stakeholders to build community support.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be included in further evaluation. Interviews will be limited to those applicants who, in addition to meeting the basic requirements, have experience and education which most closely match the position qualifications and the needs of the school system.
EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION
Compensation
This is an 11-month per year position in the Howard County Educators Association (HCEA) employee bargaining unit. The current salary ranges for this position are on the 11-Month Teacher salary scale. Actual placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Howard County Public School System and the HCEA Master Agreement which considers education and relevant prior experience. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position is exempt from overtime.
Telework Program
This position is eligible to participate after the first 60 working days of employment. Telework schedules will be subject to approval and determined by the department and/or supervisor.
Retirement
Membership in the Maryland State Retirement Agency (MSRA) pension plan is a mandatory condition of employment for all employees who meet the eligibility and membership criteria defined in the State Personnel and Pensions Article and the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR). A qualifying employee cannot reject membership, nor can an ineligible employee elect membership. The annual contribution to the pension plan will be 7% of an employee’s annual salary.
