About the Department

Responsible for assisting with maintaining all traffic signals in the City and responding to all traffic signal emergencies. Work is performed under supervision of the Traffic Engineering Foreman. No supervision is exercised over other employees.

Position Duties

  • Assists in the maintenance, repair, and replacement of traffic signals and control boxes across the City. 
  • Uses a variety of testing equipment, including ammeter, ohmmeter, voltmeter, testing lamp, or growler to isolate defects in wiring, motors, and other electrical equipment. 
  • Assists in the inspection and testing of elements such as distribution panels, controls, circuit fixtures and motors to locate faults like blow fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections, and worn motor brushes.
  • Assists in the installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of electrical circuits, fixtures, and appliances such as wiring systems, timers, alarms, bells, hoists, heaters, lights, motors, generators, transformers, communication systems, switch boards, fuse boxes, storage batteries, clock systems, and fans. 
  • Maintains a neat and orderly work area and wears and employs all required safety equipment and devise.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, equipment, and techniques of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of traffic signal electronics.
  • Ability to assist in the Investigation and repair of electrical power distribution equipment and systems. 
  • Ability to learn how to diagnose and correct causes of failure of electrical equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to follow direction in working from prints, drawings, specifications, and schedules
  • Familiarity with the use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the trade.
  • Ability to learn municipal and national electrical codes and state regulations.

Other Qualifications

  • High school diploma, with vocational electrical training including technical courses under the direction of a licensed electrician 
  • Ability to obtain the certification in Work Zone Safety with six (6) months of hire
