Team Overview

The Security Solutions Data Science team develops and deploys AI/ML models powering Mastercard’s authentication and authorization networks, with a focus on fraud and financial crime prevention. We deliver production-ready models and automated, scalable pipelines for Fortune 500 clients in fintech and banking.


Role Overview

As Director of Data Science, you will deliver innovative, production-quality financial crime detection models as part of a high-performing team of data scientists. You will drive the full model lifecycle—from data extraction to deployment and evaluation—ensuring solutions are scalable, resilient, and aligned with business needs.

We are pursuing a highly motivated individual with strong problem-solving skills to take on the challenge of structuring and engineering data and cutting-edge AI model build and evaluation processes.


Key Responsibilities

- Be a senior practitioner and lead a team of data scientists delivering production quality models that screen transaction networks.
- Work closely with the business owners to understand business requirements, performance metrics regarding data quality and model performance of customer facing products.
- Work with disparate sources of data, storage systems, and build processes and pipelines to provide cohesive datasets for analysis and modelling.
- Ensure high standards of code quality, model governance, and process maturity.
- Contribute to research and development of new AI/ML solutions and complex projects as a senior practitioner.
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Commercial teams to align model development with business requirements and customer value.
- Set the roadmap and identify methods and approaches that enhances the performance of existing fraud detection models.


Essential Skills

- Extensive experience in data science, preferably in the financial crime space, and significant leadership roles.
- Demonstrated expertise in full lifecycle model development, deployment, and evaluation for complex, real-time problems.
- Strong programming skills in Python; experience with SQL and Linux/Bash.
- Experience with XGBoost or other similar frameworks.
- Proven track record in payment fraud detection or financial crime modelling.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
- Exhibits a high degree of initiative.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related STEM field.


Preferred Skills

- Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, AI, or related field.
- Experience with large-scale data engineering and model building on petabyte-scale datasets.
- Knowledge of model evaluation for bias, inaccuracy, and error.
- Experience in lean data science and product-focused development.
- Loves working with error-prone, messy, disparate, unstructured data.
