SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Accounting Manager is responsible for the leadership and development of the Property Accountants. The Accounting Manager reports to the Director of Accounting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
- Lead and develop the Property Accountants.
- Review monthly financial statements prepared by the Property Accountants.
- Develop and maintain appropriate accounting deadlines.
- Support Property Accountants to ensure Month End Close is completed in a timely manner.
- Review General Ledger and Gross Potential Rent Report to determine the accuracy as compared to the Affordable Vacancy Report monthly.
- Ensure required external reports are completed by their deadlines.
- Review and approve monthly bank reconciliations at least quarterly for each property.
- Review financial account reconciliations for accuracy for each property at least quarterly.
- Coordinate with and develop Community Managers and Regional Property Managers to resolve and prevent accounting issues.
- Provide guidance to Property Accountants for properties being acquired, sold, or rehabilitated.
- Collaborate across all departments, including working closely with Acquisitions and Development, and Operations.
- Assist Director of Accounting in coordination and responses to external auditors.
- Regularly evaluate Standard Operating Procedures for Property Accounting and suggest improvements.
- Develop, maintain, and improve the Property Accountant onboarding process.
- Complete Personal Property Renditions and Business License returns.
- Perform other duties as required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Accounting Manager will be located in the Home Office (Memphis). Minimum travel is required, mainly for seminars or occasional visits to apartment communities.
INTERNAL & EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
The Accounting Manager will have contact with most positions throughout the company. The Accounting Manager will interact with Senior Management, Regional Property Managers, Property Accountants, Accounts Payable, and Community Managers.
Challenges
Balancing the various priorities of HUD, the property management team, site staff, Central Office staff, external auditors, investors, owners, residents, potential residents, vendors, suppliers, and callers is the most difficult part of the position. The Accounting Manager will find numerous demands on his or her time and must maintain sight of the overall operational plan. The Director of Accounting will interact with the Accounting Manager to help determine priorities. The Accounting Manager works independently to provide supervision for the Property Accountants. The ability to solve problems and questions in a timely manner is a basic requirement.
Qualifications
Knowledge & Skills Requirements
- Must be able to speak, read and write English.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products required. Must have knowledge of VLOOKUP’s and pivot tables.
- Experience with Property Management Accounting is preferred but not required.
