Position Duties
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this position:
- Trains new coach operators in all areas of coach operation, including vehicles, equipment, and procedures. Conducts obstacle course and behind the wheel training. Administers course reviews and written examinations.
- Evaluates and counsels student coach operators regarding performance; conducts interviews and probationary evaluations as needed.
- Performs regular coach operator on-board observations and evaluation of operator performance.
- Conducts training on all new bus equipment and new operating procedures; recertifies and retrains coach operators in general operations and/or specialized courses. Conducts annual AB1787 training.
- Examines operators in all areas of coach operations, administers DMV tests as needed for operators and maintenance personnel. Completes and files all state and federal training certification documents.
- Responsible for developing, delivering, and maintaining comprehensive training programs for new and existing Coach Operators to ensure safe, efficient, and customer-focused service.
- This position ensures compliance with federal, state, and agency regulations, evaluates operator performance, and fosters a culture of continuous learning and safety.
- Facilitates classroom, behind-the-wheel, and simulator training sessions using current technology and instructional best practices.
- Maintains accurate and confidential training records in compliance with FTA, FMCSA, and state standards.
- Maintains records of preventable accidents and prepares reports for the National Safety Council Accident Appeals Board. May serve as an advisory member of the Agency Accident Review Committee.
- Communicates with other agencies to keep current on teaching materials, aids and techniques used in the transit industry; performs additional research as necessary to improve materials and methods.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Provides guidance and oversight to trainees and may assist in evaluating or coaching employees under the direction of the Training Supervisor or Operations Management.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). A minimum of three (3) years of experience in the operation of motor coaches comparable to those operated by Omnitrans with a public or private transit agency and prior experience instructing adults in a formal training program or three (3) years of supervisory experience.
Knowledge of transit operations including equipment, bus operation procedures, safety regulations and federal and state public transportation regulations; teaching methods and practices. Ability to develop and write training materials and design course curriculum. maintain records and prepare reports; instruct and train employees in the safe operation of Agency vehicles; evaluate the performance of students and veteran coach operators.
COMPUTER SKILLSProficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and learning management systems (LMS). Familiarity with video analysis software, or data reporting and Transit Operations software suite is desirable.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Positions in this job classification are considered safety-sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations.
Possession of a valid California Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and passenger endorsements, along with a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with FMCSA regulations. A safe driving record is required. The position must meet the minimum qualifications for a transit bus instructor as outlined in California Vehicle Code §40099 (AB 1787). Certification as a National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course (DDC) Instructor or an equivalent safety training credential is highly desirable, as is completion of recognized instructor development programs such as those offered through the Transit Safety Institute (TSI) or other accredited training providers.
