The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) is seeking detail-oriented individuals with experience operating large mainframe computers in a data center environment for a Computer Operator position.
Under general supervision, processes job request orders and runs production jobs while operating computers, printers, mainframe, and peripheral equipment for Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) divisions, school districts, and school sites.
The Well Qualified Candidate Will Possess the Following
Knowledge:
- Principles and techniques applied to the operation of complex computer equipment and related peripheral equipment, such as high-speed printers generating over 300 pages per minute, in a high-volume online enterprise client/server environment
- Operations of large mainframe computers and their associated peripherals within a networked, distributed, client/server environment
- Windows, Mac OSX, MVS/JES, IBM z/OS, OS/JCL, and Control-M
- Recordkeeping techniques

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Experience: One year of work experience in the operation of a large-scale enterprise open systems servers or mainframe computer system using MVS/JES, z/OS, JCL, or Control-M software in a multiprogramming environment, or one year experience as a Data Control Clerk with the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
Additional Requirements: A valid California driver's license and availability of private transportation or ability to provide transportation between job sites may be required. Positions in this classification may be assigned to work a non-standard workweek that might include working Saturday and/or Sunday and shifts from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM or 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM.

Candidates who pass all exam parts are ranked according to overall exam score and placed on an eligibility (hiring) list. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Eligibility lasts for 12 months; however, additional recruitment may occur under a separate bulletin with additional candidates being merged onto the eligibility list. Some positions that involve public contact may require bilingual proficiency for which selective certification may apply (Education Code 45277.5). In addition, the eligibility list resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no eligibility list exists (Education Code 45272).
