Primary Role

American Water’s Contract Services Group (CSG) is seeking a GIS Intern for CSG’s Camden Operational Group located in Camden, NJ. This position is designed to engage interested students in the importance of GIS in the water and wastewater utility industry. The GIS Intern will assist in the performance of technical work related to designing, maintaining and producing geographic data and graphics through an automated geographic information system (GIS). A large focus of this technical work will concentrate on the importance of data quality and using tools to improve data quality/integrity. The main objective of this position is to offer an opportunity for hands-on learning to the student in their field of study.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide GIS support to project staff and client technical staff including but not limited to creating and maintaining map products or concept level project drawings using ERSI software platform.
  • Under general supervision, utilize GIS to update and maintain the water and wastewater utility asset inventory.
  • Create and perform GIS data quality checks using a suite of tools including but not limited to: Data Reviewer, Power BI, Attribute Assistant
  • Under general supervision, assist in the improvements and maintenance of the existing ArcGIS Enterprise Organization
  • Assist project staff with integration of GIS inventory, CMMS program and business intelligence systems.
  • Opportunity to perform GPS surveys that utilize mapping grade GPS receivers and mobile mapping tools for field work
  • Follow all company Environmental, Health and Safety policies; wear and work in the proper personal protective equipment (provided by the company).

Knowledge/Skills

  • Detail oriented to conduct thorough analyses and evaluations, render and implement timely decisions and recommendations
  • Ability to work independently and manage time across multiple projects and deadlines
  • Ability to seek input/feedback and coordinate with other team members.
  • Good communications skills
  • Proficient in use of tablet and handheld electronic devices
  • Experience with the Esri ArcGIS suite of software
  • Basic methods, techniques and procedures utilized in the planning, design, maintenance and production of GIS data and graphics.
  • Basic ability to interpret CAD (computer-aided design) drawings
  • Python experience is preferred but not required
  • Basic use of mapping grade GPS receivers is optional

Experience/Education

  • Enrollment in a GIS, Engineering or relevant accredited degree program
  • Transitioning military members with GIS or Imagery backgrounds

Work Environment

  • Valid Driver’s License is preferred
  • Must be able to pass a multijurisdictional background check
  • This role is part time working 24 hours a week.
