SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT
The position of Language Access Liaison supports district-level language access programs for multilingual families and for families with communication barriers or disabilities. Additionally, this position promotes two-way communication for families in their preferred language from the district and schools.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Work collaboratively with other district and school site personnel as appropriate to identify language access needs of parents/guardians and other family members and their preferred method of communication.
- Enhance two-way communication for families needing language access services by scheduling and documenting interpretation requests at school, district and program meetings and events.
- Work with community relations staff in development of language access materials to be shared with families.
- Provide technical support and training on the District’s multilingual communication tool. As needed, provide translated messaging support to the Community Relations department.
- Respond in a timely and appropriate manner to requests and inquiries regarding language access from a variety of stakeholders, including family members, other community members, relevant state agencies, and school site personnel, among others.
- Schedule training dates, communicate with participants and provide administrative support for training events.
- Provide administrative support and prepare extra service contracts and documentation under the direction of the executive director.
- Distribute translation devices to schools and update inventory tracking.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
This position does not oversee the provision of English language instruction or Dual Language or other bilingual programs for students, but instead the provision of language access for parents, guardians, and other family members.
The essential functions listed above are not exhaustive and may be supplemented, as necessary. The position may perform a variety of non-essential functions consistent with its scope and intent.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Associate degree in interpreter/translation studies, communications social services, or education-related field and one (1) year of experience in program coordination, preferably in a public agency or non-profit environment
- Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year-basis.

- Ability to communicate effectively across a diverse range of stakeholders and audiences, including families, school and district personnel, community-based groups, and state level agencies.
- Maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups in a multicultural and diverse community.
- Demonstrated ability to be well-organized and to be able to readily locate and access relevant resources and reference materials.
- Ability to represent the school district in ways consistent with district and board policy and obligations.
- Ability to draw on data as appropriate and generate reports which respond to differing criteria.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, collaborative relationships and effective teams or partnerships.
- Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment.
- Ability to remain flexible and work effectively under pressure.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to write appropriately for multiple audiences and purposes.
- Knowledge of local community-based organizations and advocacy groups
- Knowledge or budding knowledge of professional organizations which have to do with spoken and signed language interpretation and written translation
- Knowledge of the communication and messaging technologies that have been adopted by a number of districts, and which draw on machine translation for communicating with families who use a language other than English
- Knowledge of the relevant legal framework for the provision of language access services in the schools, including federal and state legislation and federal guidance
- Knowledge of principles and tenets held and promoted by recognized professional organizations for spoken and signed interpreters and translators
- Skill in human relations and conflict resolution; ability to motivate others.
- Skill in public speaking and making presentations.
- Skill in planning, organizing, coordinating programs, activities, and events.
Certification and Licenses
- Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of insurance.
- Must be able to obtain access to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Desirable Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in interpreter/translation studies or communications, business or education related field
- Project management or program coordination experience
- Multi-Lingual
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an office environment. Some travel to and between school sites is necessary. Must be able to use fingers, hands, and arms and to listen carefully and focus while filtering out normal office noise. Ability to see, hear, speak, walk, sit, stand, crouch, and reach. Moderate lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds. Reaching overhead and horizontally. Dexterity of fingers and hands to operate equipment and a computer keyboard. Teamwork and high productivity requirements create frequent extra hour days, attendance at meetings before and after work, and weekend work. May be exposed to distraught, angry, or hostile individuals.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employment with Clover Park School District is conditional pending completion of a Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint background check as required by RCW28A.400.303.
