POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Language Coordinator, the Language Specialist is responsible for developing Yurok language curriculum, developing and maintaining Yurok language website, and training staff in use of various curriculum development software programs. This position will present language lessons in a variety of settings.
Position Duties
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Responsible for developing Yurok language lessons and resources for preschool through high school age students.
2. Responsible for procuring needed supplies including preparing purchase orders and price comparisons.
3. Responsible for responding to requests by teachers and tribal members for language materials.
4. Responsible for preparing materials for language archives and teachers.
5. Responsible for developing and maintaining language program website.
6. Responsible for training staff in the use of various curriculum software programs.
7. Responsible for presenting language lessons in a variety of settings including staff training/orientation, summer camps, classrooms and community language classes.
8. Responsible for conducting documentation sessions with elders.
9. Performs other duties assigned in order to meet the objectives of the Yurok Language program.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

2. Employee must be willing to acquire any special certifications or attend any training that is determined to be relevant or becomes required of the position in the future.
3. Candidates with equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

2. Ability to demonstrate intermediate to advanced fluency in the Yurok language as measured by the Yurok language fluency testing.
3. Intermediate to advanced fluency in the Yurok Language.
4. Ability to write the Yurok language.
5. Ability to develop creative language materials.
6. Ability to develop and present Yurok language lesson plans.
7. Minimum of one year experience teaching the Yurok language in a classroom setting.
8. Knowledge of community resources which relate to language curriculum.
9. Ability to work effectively with tribal elders and other Yurok tribal members.
10. Intermediate to advanced computer skills.
11. All applicants are subject to the Tribe's Drug and Alcohol Free Work Place Policy including pre-employment screening.
12. Must be able to pass criminal and character background investigation including fingerprint screening.
13. Must be able to work under conditions of minimal supervision.
14. THIS POSITION REQUIRES COMPLIANCE WITH PUBLIC LAW 101-630.
15. Recognition that in order to serve Yurok People one must know as much as possible about Yurok history, culture and values.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. All applicants will acknowledge and follow all Yurok Tribe personnel and other policies and procedures.
2. All applicants are subject to the Tribe’s Drug and Alcohol Policy including pre-employment screening.
3. Valid state issued driver’s license and/or the ability to obtain a California driver’s license. Must be insurable on the Tribe’s insurance policy.
4. Must pass a background investigation and fingerprint clearance.
5. This position requires compliance with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act Public Law 101-630; 25 Code of Federal Regulations Part 63 - Indian child Protection and Family Violence Prevention; Crime Control Act of 1990, Employee Background Checks; and Executive Order 12968, Adjudicative Guidelines.
