Appoquinimink School District Additional Information: Show/Hide - Provide direct and/or consultative support to students with hearing loss.
- Participate in the identification, assessment, and development and implementation of IEPs or 504 Plans for students eligible under the hearing impairment category.
- Collect and analyze data related to IEP goals, report student progress quarterly through progress monitoring reports.
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience in evaluation procedures, including both formal and informal assessments, and in interpreting results—such as audiograms—for eligibility determination under special education.
- Develop and complete a communication plan for each student identified with a hearing impairment and receiving special education services.
- Plan and deliver individualized or small group specialized instruction based on students' IEP goals.
- Support classroom staff in understanding hearing loss and implementing effective strategies to meet students' needs.
- Conduct fidelity checks to evaluate the effectiveness of accommodations for students with hearing impairments.
- Provide professional development to staff on topics such as hearing loss, instructional strategies, material adaptations, and the use of hearing technology (e.g., hearing aids, HAT systems).
- Troubleshoot classroom amplification systems and personal hearing equipment used by students.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Inclusive Education and/or Supervisor of Special Education.
- Valid certification in Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education as required by the Delaware Professional Standards Board (1574 certification).
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and/or other communication modalities used by students with hearing loss.
- Experience working in inclusive settings and collaborating with general education teachers.
- Strong understanding of assistive listening devices (ALDs), HAT/DM systems, cochlear implants, and classroom amplification technologies.
- Familiarity with state and federal special education laws and regulations, including IDEA and Section 504.
- Ability to interpret and apply audiological reports and use them to inform instruction and accommodations.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing Communication Plans as required for IEP students with hearing loss.
- Knowledge of language development and accessibility strategies for students with hearing impairments.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience with progress monitoring tools, data collection, and adjusting instruction based on data.
- Training or experience in coaching or providing professional development to staff.
- Ability to manage a caseload across multiple school sites, if applicable.
- Ability to differentiate instruction for students using various communication modalities.
- Strong skills in coaching and training educational staff on classroom accommodations.
- Frequent school visits; occasional evening meetings for family events.
- May supervise or coordinate assigned staff, projects, or contracted services.

POSITION OVERVIEW
Under the direction of a member of the District Office Special Education Leadership Team, the Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides specialized instruction, consultation, and support services for eligible students with hearing loss. The position collaborates with school teams, families, and related service providers to ensure access to the educational environment and promote academic and communication success.

TRAINING
Appoquinimink School District may require you to be trained in Safety-Care or a similar competency-based crisis prevention intervention training program as a condition of your continued employment.
