POSITION SUMMARY:
The position of Financial Counselor serves to help all patients, especially those who are uninsured, underinsured, or have a low Income. Assess and ultimately resolve their financial situations. Duties include establishing payment plans and other financial arrangements. Determining patients' eligibility for hospital sponsored charity care and grant assistance. Other duties include a variety of functions relating to registration, admitting, and discharging. Providing assistance as needed with patient financial complaints. Greeting all patients and visitors according to CVH customer service standards, collecting pertinent demographic and billing Information In accordance with all state and federal regulations. Responsible for the verification of insurance benefits and securing pre-certification and authorization for scheduled patient encounters. Document and process patient financial information.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Minimum Education Preferred:
- College courses preferred
Minimum Work Experience Required:
- 2-3 years of related work experience required, preferably in healthcare or customer service environment
- 1- 2 years of medical insurance verification experience
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal programs and eligibility requirements
- Medical terminology and/ or medical experience required.
- Knowledge of: federal/ state regulations, A/P, ICD, CPT codes.
Minimum Work Experience Preferred:
- Professional customer service skills
- Experience discussing and resolving financial situations with patients
- Comfortable processing and handling cash and other means of patient payment
- Computer skills, including but not limited to Microsoft, Word and Excel
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Good organizational and multi-tasking skills
POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Insurance Coverage
- Meets with patients on one on one basis to discuss cost of hospital services and patients current financial situation, obtaining all pertinent demographic and financial data to ensure resolution of account.
- Conducts detailed discussion with patient, obtain information, and completes required tasks to determine patient eligibility for Medicaid and other federal, state, and local government or private sources as appropriate.
- Assists patient in completing all applications required to receive external financial assistance and/or hospital charity care, and follows up with potential sources of aid until financial assistance is either received or denied.
- If necessary, calculates patients remaining balances, and then discusses and finalizes the method of resolving patients balances through point of service collections, payment plans, or other arrangements.
- Coordinate agenda and schedule for Monthly Community Care meetings.
Knowledge

- Acts as backup for Patient Advocate for grievance.
Patient Communication
- Provides facility wide education on Community Care and Grievance Policy and Procedure.
- Maintain knowledge and requirements for Hospital/Clinic grievance process.
- Keep accurate records and follow all State and Federal guidelines.
- Daily communication with physicians, nurses, visitors, and patients.
- Daily external communication with outside resources such as eligibility vendors, state and county agencies.
Billing Information
- Possess the knowledge of current policies and procedures.
- Ability to communicate all pertinent questions and answers related to the registration process.
- Demonstrates knowledge related to all current federal and state regulations.
Registration
- Verifies eligibility and benefits prior to any scheduled procedures.
- Maintains accurate computer records and process patient financial information.
- Maintains quality communication between the business office, registration, physician offices. and all departments
Reporting
- Demonstrates computer skills; proficient in excel.
- Uses good organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- Monitors A/R, denials, verifications and authorization.
