About the Department
The primary purpose of this position is to provide foreign language interpreting services in a variety of settings. Employees ensure that all services, communications, documentation, etc., associated with a program are provided in the client’s native language as mandated by law, program guidelines, or needs. Employees provide verbal interpretation of all information shared between staff and clients/parents/caregivers, etc. Work of an interpreter involves translating all written materials, and employees serve as a point of contact for clients. Employees may coordinate transportation, arrange referrals to local services and resources; interpret test items, programmatic information, or results of evaluations; conduct interviews to obtain program or personal data and/or assist management in monitoring the accuracy of translating/interpreting services. Employees assist clients to ensure that appropriate services are determined, offered, received, or given. Work may take place in an office setting, classroom, home, childcare environment, hospital, or prison.
- Employees in this class may serve as a resource to staff on cultural diversity or conduct staff development events to increase knowledge of the culture. Employees may help facilitate parental involvement and understanding.
- Responsible for interpreting and translating Spanish foreign language for Child Welfare Intake staff for the purpose of explaining various services/guidelines, determining needs and types of services needed, interpreting for social workers, translating forms and educational materials as needed and interpreting phone calls/messages/parent visits.
- Must have working knowledge of the Social Services Programs and other services offered by the Department. This individual must be able to effectively and correctly interpret medical and socio/economic information. This job requires accurate recording documentation.
- Work involves face-to-face and telephone contacts with a culturally diverse, high-risk population of case management clients.
- Most work is conducted within the Social Services department. Home and/or business visits are a regular part of the job duties.
Regular attendance and punctuality are essential. The Foreign Language Interpreter must be available to agency staff and the public during established hours to ensure critical communications and face-to-face contacts are effectively and timely handled and to ensure communications are routed to the proper operational intake or caseworker.
This position will perform other related work as required.
Position Duties
Graduation from high school or GED and one year of experience preferably in a health care or human services setting, demonstrating a fluency in English and the foreign language(s) necessary to successfully perform assigned job duties.
