Assistant Director of Aquatics

POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. As an Assistant Director of Aquatics, you will supervise daily pool activities and be responsible for proactively communicating and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. In addition to lifeguard duties, this position assists the Senior Program Director of Aquatics with scheduling, hiring, training, and supervising all staff.

EDUCATION AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Have or able to complete Lifeguard certification and Lifeguard Instructor certification  Able to complete Certified Pool Operator certification
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid required  Previous lifeguard or aquatics experience is required

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature.
  • Maintain all required certifications.
  • Assists the Senior Program Director of Aquatics in filling gaps in the guard schedule on evenings and weekends
  • Assists recruiting, hiring, training and supervising aquatic staff including lifeguards, guard instructors, and First Aid/CPR instructors.
  • Oversees development and delivery of quality aquatics programs including safety around water and lifeguarding.
  • Assist the lifeguard coordinator in creating lifeguard staff schedules.
  • Assist the Senior Aquatics Director in planning and conducting monthly in-services.
  • Assist the Senior Aquatics Director in conducting regular lifeguard audits and pool emergency drills.
  • Assist in pool maintenance, safety, and cleanliness.
  • Assist in training and onboarding staff, certifying that new hires have completed all necessary new hire training modules and onboarding classes. 
  • Assist with minor paperwork for new hires under the age of 18. 
  • Maintain pool log sheets and other log sheets as required.
  • Keep inventory of pool supplies and notify the Senior Aquatics Director when items need to be ordered.
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required by the Senior Aquatics Director.  
  • Assist with lifeguard coverage as needed.  
  • Other duties as assigned and required by business necessity.

  • Must complete all required certifications and trainings and renewals as dictated by policy  
  • Shifts will require evening and weekend availability at various periods throughout the year

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • The position requires mobility attentiveness to visual and audible cues for recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or in process of unsafe behaviors. Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic colors and shades; depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • The position requires proficient swimming ability and the proper application of rescue and first aid techniques.  Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
  • Must have the ability to lift various materials up to 25 lbs occasionally and the ability to properly extract individuals from the pool(s) to the deck as needed in rescues.
  • The employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; observe and possibly interpret people and situations; analyze and solve problems.
  • May interact with members and participants who are distressed or dissatisfied.  
  • Work in a wet/humid environment and come into contact with chlorine.
  •  Exposure to indoor or outdoor elements.
  • The noise level in the work environment can vary from quiet to loud depending upon the programming that is occurring at the time.
