McMaster Children's Hospital is the regional academic centre for pediatric acute care, rehabilitation, developmental and mental health services. The Extensive Needs/Mi-Care Program is comprised of Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) and Ministry of Health (MOH) funded services for individuals up to the age of 18, whose needs cannot be met in a single service stream and requires an integrated approach across Mental, Behavioural and Developmental Health. The Extensive Needs/Mi Care Program supports a culture of innovation, family centered service and evidenced based interventions.
The Early Career Scientist is the champion and driver of the scientific and regulatory integrity of clinical research being conducted within their research objectives. Reporting to the Research Institute Executive Director or VP Research and Innovation, they will independently conduct clinical research guided by HHS Policy and Guidelines for Research Framework. The Early Career Scientist is an early to mid level scientist with intermediate knowledge in their area of expertise, a well-established industry reputation and notable publications. They will be responsible for obtaining research funding through grants, and oversee design implementation and evaluation of their studies.
The Early Career Scientist may also play a critical role in provide to translate evaluation and research findings into innovative and impactful patient care. They inform program development, system design, policy development, as well as continuing advocacy work within their evaluation and research assignment / program, and supports the goals/strategic plans of the hospital and/or research institutes to further grow and integrate clinical service delivery, evaluation, research, innovation, and learning at HHS. They will provide mentorship and direction to junior research staff and collaborated with HHS Clinical Program staff (as applicable).

Full-time hours (37.5 hours/week).

- Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD in Epidemiology, Psychology, Health Services Research, or related discipline, or MD)
- Completion of a research fellowship, including a post graduate degree OR a minimum of 6 publications with 3 being 1st author paper OR other evidence of scholarliness
- 3-5 years of experience in clinical research management,
- 3-5 years of experience in academic research conduct,
- Capacity to design and lead a research project OR capable of functioning as a Project Officer with the support of a Senior HHS Researcher.
- Research expertise, content are and methods consistent with HHS research goals and directions
- Documentation of prior investigator-initiated or investigator-led research or major sub-study as Investigator or co-Investigator on HHS research or a topic area consistent with HHS research focus.
- Experience conducting complex data linkages with healthcare utilization data to inform system improvements
- Strong management and analysis of quantitative and/or qualitative data, with experience using advanced analytics software
- Demonstrated ability for effective collaboration and communication within a disciplinary team and with a diverse group of internal and external interested parties
