As a Senior Technical Engineer work with the Head of Ground Engineering and Lead Geotechnical Engineer to provide geotechnical leadership for the HS2 programme by contributing to the development of Standards and specifications, undertaking technical assurance of design work, supporting construction and completing geotechnical initiatives and activities which benefit the programme.

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer advises and supports Main Works Civil Contracts Integrated Project Teams (MWCC IPTs), and other contracts (e.g. civil engineering contracts, depots, stations, rail systems, operations and maintenance) as necessary.

About the role:

  • Actively promote and embed Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all work, and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.
  • Maintain technical standards, guidance notes and specifications for the geotechnical discipline with the Lead Geotechnical Engineer.
  • Acting as a Subject Matter Expert, provide technical advice in relation to geotechnical engineering to all parts of the HS2 Ltd business.  This includes responding to RFIs, TQs and Departures, and undertaking impact assessments of Standards changes.
  • Support delivery teams in providing assurance that the geotechnical engineering on the HS2 Railway is undertaken in accordance with technical requirements set by the Civil Engineering standards.
  • Provide technical support to geotechnical engineering activities across the whole HS2 project (i.e. within HS2 Ltd and the supply chain) to ensure an integrated, consistent approach to delivering the range of activities associated with the advisory and client role of the Technical Authority invested in the Railway Directorate. Where necessary, in conjunction with HS2  financial and procurement teams, arrange for the input of specialist engineering consultants.
  • Work with HS2 IPT and Rail Systems-track, and their Client Expert Adviser, to assess residual ground movements and accept handover of earthwork from MWCC.
  • Work with HS2 Operations and Maintenance teams to develop robust and efficient infrastructure maintenance and management processes for geotechnical assets.
  • Work with HS2 IPT and commercial teams to manage ground risk, for example providing advice when Compensation Events are received against ground conditions clauses.
  • Promote the implementation of best practice and innovative engineering techniques, technologies and processes, driving consistency and identifying opportunities for efficiencies.

About You:

Skills

  • Use and development of scientific, technical and engineering principles.
  • Ability to analyse data and report on findings, using them to guide decision-making and problem solving.
  • Measurement and research to identify the source or root cause of a problem or issue.
  • Promoting quality and best practice.
  • Communicating technical and other information effectively with others at all levels including both internal and external and technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Applying technical standards as appropriate.
  • Able to provide specialist technical support and leadership on discipline-specific scientific, technical and engineering principles to project development / delivery teams but knowing when to seek further guidance from the Lead Geotechnical Engineer or others.
  • Able to provide technical and commercial management skills to support project development / delivery teams, working under supervision of line manager.

Knowledge

  • Civil engineering or geology degree (or equivalent) coupled with Chartered Civil Engineer/Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience.
  • Understanding of general civil engineering design and construction processes with expert knowledge of geotechnical engineering.
  • Knowledge of ground investigation on major civil engineering projects
  • The design and construction of foundations, earthworks and geotechnical engineering assets, ideally on major infrastructure projects
  • Understanding of contract (including NEC3), commercial, risk and interface management principles.

Types of Experience

  • Geotechnical engineering design experience
  • Experience in managing geotechnical engineering on large complex major projects.
  • Experience of managing competing project and engineering demands, with cost and schedule implications.
  • Managing (either directly or ‘by influence’) designers and contractors in the delivery of ground engineering on major civil engineering works.
