Position Summary
The Crossing Guard is responsible for ensuring the safety of students and staff during arrival, lunch, and dismissal times. This position also provides campus supervision, monitors visitor activity, and assists with maintaining a clean and orderly school environment.
Duties & Responsibilities
Crosswalk and Safety Supervision
· Provide crosswalk duty before and after school, as well as during lunch times.
· Install crosswalk cones (three on each side) before school and ensure vehicles do not park or stop in a way that blocks crosswalk visibility.
· Collect and store cones in the designated storage room in the art building after school.
· Place cones along the basketball court each morning before drive line begins.
· Close back gates at 8:15 a.m. daily and oversee visitor access throughout the school day.
· Monitor and report any students violating the closed campus policy (7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.).
· Observe and report any unauthorized visitors, including nearby homeless individuals, and notify authorities as needed.
· Oversee student drivers (seniors and EVIT scholars) who leave campus during the school day.
Campus Maintenance and Supervision
· Blow debris from campus areas each morning.
· Supervise and assist with lunch cleanup, ensuring materials are properly stored and supplies replenished. Clean garbage can lids monthly.
· Blow or hose down the courtyard after lunch.
· Wipe down all exterior doors weekly.
· Clean garbage cans quarterly.
· Replant flowers in outdoor pots as needed.
· Routinely inspect student bathrooms for graffiti or misuse and coordinate cleanup as necessary.
· Monitor parking lots for vehicles without parking permits and coordinate with the designated staff member.
· Conduct regular walks around parking lots, fields, and the front of the school to pick up litter.
· Monitor restricted areas (e.g., behind the science building and around the water pumps) and keep them free of students and trash.
· Ensure all small gates (alley, front, field) remain locked.
· Maintain cleanliness of dumpster areas (both in the main parking lot and by the Lincoln Building) and ensure gates remain closed.
· Monitor the Lincoln Building parking lots for unauthorized activity and contact downtown patrol when necessary.
· Oversee and maintain the Lost and Found area, ensuring timely cleanup and distribution of items.
· Provide coverage at the front desk when needed.
· Assist Administration with additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Competencies & Strengths
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience: Prior experience in school safety, supervision, or maintenance preferred.
Special Skills:
· Strong attention to safety and detail.
· Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, and the public.
· Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently.
· Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Type of fingerprint clearance: Shall be fingerprint checked pursuant to A.R.S 15-512
Physical functions: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time (up to several hours daily). Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting light to moderate objects (up to 25 lbs). Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind. Visual and auditory ability to observe student and vehicle movement and respond quickly to potential safety hazards. Ability to blow a whistle or use a signaling device to gain attention when necessary. Manual dexterity to handle tools and perform light maintenance or cleanup tasks.
Equipment used: Safety vest and handheld stop sign/paddle. Traffic cones and safety barricades. Leaf blower and/or hose for debris removal. Cleaning supplies (rags, disinfectants, brooms, etc.). Two-way radio or walkie-talkie for communication. Whistle for student and vehicle signaling. Basic hand tools (as needed for light maintenance)
Work Environment: Primarily outdoor work environment; exposure to sun, wind, dust, and occasional inclement weather. Moderate noise levels (traffic, students, playgrounds). Interaction with students, staff, parents, and community members on a daily basis. May occasionally be exposed to unpleasant odors or trash during cleanup duties. Work is performed on and around school grounds, parking lots, and crosswalk areas.
