THE POSITION
Under the supervision of a supervisor in the Facilities Department, cleans, maintains and repairs District swimming pools and related equipment and facilities to ensure safe and sanitary conditions.
CURRENT OPENINGS: One 12-month/40 hours per week position. Salary placement will be on Range 21 of the CSEA Salary Schedule "B." Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($24.07 per hour) of this salary range.

Position Duties
- Brushes and scrubs pool tiles, and vacuums swimming pool according to established procedures.
- Inspects, adjusts and performs preventive maintenance to pool machinery and equipment including pumps, filtration equipment and controls, co-generation system, boilers and chemical pumps.
- Performs a variety of cleaning duties including sweeping and hosing decks, emptying trash, cleaning drains, hair strainers, and gutters.
- Checks, calibrates, and adjusts the automatic chlorination system.
- Monitors and adjusts chemical levels to maintain healthy water conditions.
- Applies a variety of chemicals, including liquid chlorine, algaecides, acids and bases, as needed to address changing water conditions.
- Inspects pool facilities for proper and safe conditions and operation including gates, fencing, diving boards, ladders, guard towers, lights and safety equipment.
- Monitors automated backwashing procedures and performs manual backwashes when needed.
- Checks and maintains pool temperature and pressure gauges.
- Coordinates schedules and resolves issues with physical education teachers and aquatic coaches.
- Coordinates major repairs with Facilities Department staff and outside vendors.
- Maintains operational log of daily maintenance inspections.
- Orders and stores related supplies, chemicals and parts, maintaining proper inventory and related records.
OTHER RELATED DUTIES
- May use a respirator when checking pool chemicals.
- May fire and service a low-pressure boiler.
- May perform basic maintenance duties on pool equipment.
- May assist on basic maintenance duties.
- May assist in performing building inspections and reporting equipment and structural repairs.
- May make minor repairs.
- May load, unload, and move equipment, furniture, and supplies.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS AMONG RELATED CLASSES
A Pool Maintenance Worker tests swimming pool water, operates pool equipment, and performs a variety of custodial work to keep a school site's swimming pool facility in a sanitary and orderly condition.
An Locker Room Manager (Female) and Locker Room Manager (Male) in addition to performing custodial and locker room duties (e.g. issuing lockers, maintaining records), assists the Pool Maintenance Worker in pool maintenance functions by checking pool Chlorine and pH levels daily.
A Custodian II performs varied custodian, grounds, and minor maintenance duties, which includes the responsibility of securing assigned areas.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employees in this classification stand, walk, climb ladders, swim, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (some positions may occasionally lift up to 100 lbs., with assistance), carry, push, pull, stoop, bend repeatedly, repetitively use fingers, use wrist or hands in applying pressure or in a twisting motion, simultaneously use both hands and/or both legs, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, discern hue gradation of chemical tests, speak clearly, and hear well.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees in this classification work both inside and outside, with loud noises*, sharp objects**, vapors, gases, cleaning agents, hazardous materials, odors***, in the absence of immediate supervision, and in direct contact with students.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
No education required.
Experience:
One year of experience in custodial, building, or pool maintenance work.
Special:
- A valid Swimming Pool Service Technician certificate must be obtained within six months of employment.
- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver license.
- Evidence of adequate insurance for a motor vehicle which meets or exceeds the California legal liability insurance requirement and continue to maintain insurability.
- Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination.
- Federal law requires that employees receive additional ACBM training if they work in areas in which asbestos building materials may be disturbed. This training is provided by the District within the first 60 days of employment.
- A Red Cross First-Aid Certificate is desirable.
