Wastewater Mechanic Specialist (Fort Carson)
 

As a Wastewater Mechanic Specialist, you will ensure the performance, safety, and optimization of our Wastewater Plants by inspecting, maintaining, and repairing pumps, drives, and mechanical equipment. Your expert mechanical knowledge will be utilized to ensure effective operations and maintenance of our treatment facilities and our 18-mile sludge pipeline. A day in the life of a Wastewater Mechanic Specialist may include:

  • Maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and replacing pumps, motors, valves, and pipelines
  • Helping maintain, calibrate, and operate a variety of equipment used to treat wastewater
  • Maintaining chemical feed and mixing equipment
  • Inspecting, testing, and preparing confined spaces for safe entry
  • Inspecting, testing, and certifying a variety of safety equipment
  • Rigging and lifting as needed for maintenance activities
  • Conducting continuous preventative maintenance on wastewater treatment plant equipment
  • Determining and adjusting preventative maintenance sequence intervals to maintain or lower costs and increase efficiencies
  • Collecting and interpreting data from analytical equipment such as vibration analysis, oil analysis, and thermographs
  • Performing minor to medium welding tasks
  • Performing electrical, plumbing, heating ventilation, air conditioning, structural maintenance, and repairs to buildings and facilities
  • Rebuilding process equipment to include valves, pumps, motors, blowers, and boilers
     

Please note that this position requires the ability to work standby and overtime as needed, as well as help provide 24/7/365 coverage for the plant approximately once every six weeks based on the standby schedule.
 

Who You Are

  • Demonstrated mechanical experience in a commercial or industrial environment, preferably within a water or wastewater treatment capacity
  • Possession of a Colorado Class D Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification, or the ability to obtain within two years of hire
  • Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver's license
     


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exerts in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Heavy Work.
  • Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.

The Wastewater Mechanic Specialist will assist in performing and supporting activities related to the construction, operation, and maintenance of Fort Carson's water and wastewater distribution and collection systems.

Under the Intergovernmental Support Agreement (IGSA), Colorado Springs Utilities is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of Fort Carson’s water, electric and gas infrastructure. Currently, however, wastewater will become a 4th service January 1, 2026, this position will begin as soon as possible. Pursuant to the IGSA, this position will support operations and maintenance of Fort Carson’s distribution and collection systems up to and including complex infrastructure designed to transport and treat sanitary and industrial effluents in compliance with environmental regulations, as well as operating wastewater and industrial wastewater systems and mainlines. In this role, you will support the team by cleaning the collection systems sanitary and industrial waste main lines. You will also be tasked with the cleaning of drop latrines and manhole rehabilitation with utilities best practices.

This position will be part of a water and wastewater crew that is responsible for managing the construction and maintenance of new developments, commercial construction, outage response, and providing construction crew oversight in both distribution and collections at Fort Carson under the IGSA.  You will work onsite at Fort Carson but may be called to support Colorado Springs Utilities’ water and wastewater distribution and collection systems construction crews as needed.

Within this role, you will be part of a team that is responsible for a wide variety of technical duties and will ensure that all activities adhere to Colorado Springs Utilities' Safety Rules and Construction Standards. Additionally, the position requires regular interaction with numerous internal and external customers as well as proficient management of resources, equipment, and personnel to ensure the successful completion, performance, and review of the water and wastewater work.
