Fulton County Board of Health Internship Opportunity
This is an unpaid educational internship located within our Epidemiology Department designed to provide meaningful professional experience in the field of public health.
Overview
The Fulton County Board of Health invites current Master of Public Health (MPH) students to participate in a hands-on learning experience focused on rabies surveillance and animal bite data management. This opportunity allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world public health practice while working alongside experienced epidemiologists.
Interns will contribute to the analysis of animal bite reports, learn about rabies risk assessments, and gain insight into local disease surveillance systems.

Position Duties
Learning Objectives
- Gain practical experience using public health surveillance systems (SendSS).
- Develop skills in data cleaning, organization, and analysis.
- Understand the local and state processes for rabies surveillance and response.
- Strengthen professional communication and teamwork in a public health environment.
- Apply epidemiologic methods to real data to support program improvement and public health action.
- Access and extract animal bite data from the State Electronic Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (SendSS).
- Clean, organize, and analyze data to identify trends, errors, and reporting gaps.
- Collaborate with epidemiologists to verify data accuracy and completeness.
- Support rabies risk assessments and assist in public health follow-up activities.
- Prepare summary reports or visualizations that highlight data trends and outcomes.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for improving surveillance processes.
Minimum Qualifications
Student Eligibility and Requirements
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) program.
- Receive academic credit for the internship or practicum as part of their academic program.
- Attend a school that has a valid Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Fulton County Board of Health or is willing to work with FCBOH to establish one.
- Commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week during the internship term.
- Successfully complete a background check, fingerprinting, and drug screening prior to placement.
- Completed coursework in epidemiology, biostatistics, or related disciplines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (experience with other data tools is a plus).
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality.

Additional Information for Internship Applicants
The Fulton County Board of Health (FCBOH) accepts educational credentials recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the U.S. Department of Education (DOE). FCBOH may contact educational institutions to verify enrollment, degree status, or academic standing.
The selected intern will be required to complete a background check, fingerprinting, drug screening, and reference checks prior to placement.
As a participant in the FCBOH internship program, interns may be asked to assist with public health response activities in the event of a declared emergency, as part of the agency’s commitment to protecting community health.
