PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the activities of the Maintenance function to include buildings and operational equipment. This position must also demonstrate effective leadership in all aspects of the maintenance function by anticipating and responding to immediate building and equipment needs with key focus on safety, food safety, efficiency, and quality. Responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of production equipment, and building. Preventative and predictive measures shall be used to maximize operating efficiency. Direct and assist the hourly maintenance employees to provide preventative maintenance, timely break-down repairs and other maintenance initiatives throughout the facility.
SUPERVISION:
- 25 Maintenance Technicians (shared responsibility)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead, direct and assist (as needed) maintenance employees in daily activities of performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and ensuring that production equipment is in safe and efficient working condition and responding in a timely manner to equipment breakdowns.
- Help create a culture that does not tolerate equipment failures to promote a proactive approach to Maintenance.
- Seek to understand and eliminate equipment failures and unscheduled downtime through Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Coach, lead, train and maintain a qualified workforce. Continually monitor and supervise mechanics with focus on work quality and efficiency.
- Administer corrective actions and performance reviews for direct reports.
- Assist in safety audits and food safety audits as needed.
- Identify, troubleshoot, plan, and implement corrective action for maintenance related issues.
- Provide support and alternatives for Operations leadership as it relates to mechanical process, food safety and safety improvements.
- Coordinate and collaborate with other departments in establishing and carrying out maintenance related activities (e.g., shutdown work, PMs, work orders, etc.).
- Diagnose breakdown problems and develop ways to pre-empt breakdowns by developing strategies to improve overall reliability and safety of plant, personnel, and production processes.
- Develop and maintain vendor and contractor relationships.
- Communicate maintenance related information with Senior leadership, Operations leadership, maintenance staff, and other necessary contacts (e.g., contractors, vendors, etc.).
- Assist in developing and adhering to department budget.

- Responsible for food safety and quality.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- The work environment is manufacturing.
- Frequently exposed to airborne particles (dust) and/or toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
- Frequently exposed to hot/cold and/or humid conditions.
- Frequently works near machinery with moving parts.
- Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places.
- Frequently exposed to fumes and risk of electrical shock and vibration.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma, or a GED equivalent from an accredited institution required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years’ mechanical field experience and 2-3 years leadership experience in Maintenance (preferably in milling).
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written and/or verbal form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Ability to read, write and speak fluently in English is required.
- Ability to use computers and all standard programs used by the industry and the ability to learn and effectively use any and all other computer programs that are or will be made available.
- Possess strategic thinking (e.g., analyzing and applying a broad organizational and business perspective to identify and maintain focus on key drivers of current and future organizational performance).
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, safety files, operating and maintenance instructions/procedure manuals, and/or governmental regulations.
- Professional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write informative reports, business correspondence and formal presentations, that can be effective to all levels of personnel.
- Strong planning and organizational skills to run multiple projects and/or initiatives at a time by driving alignment across stakeholders, creating plans for the work to be completed and delegating work appropriately to balance own and team’s workload.
- Ability to apply mathematical applications to practical situations.
- Ability to understand basic statistics for process control.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Regularly required to walk and move about the facility.
- Required to sit; use hands to finger; handle, feel/hold objects; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; speak; hear, taste and smell.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to safely work at heights over 20’, including manlifts, ladders, platforms, equipment tops and scaffolding.
- Must be able to climb ladders and platforms, enter confined spaces and wear all safety equipment.
- Must be able to speak on the phone, make field visits to industrial areas when necessary, and to remain on feet for extended periods of time.
