The General Superintendent oversees and coordinates the daily field operations for multiple steel erection projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project schedules and quality standards. This position provides leadership to Foremen, skilled trades, and labor crews, while working closely with Project Managers and other departments to achieve overall project success.


Key Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise Foremen and field crews to ensure safety, quality, and productivity standards are met.
  • Plan and schedule work activities in coordination with Project Managers to meet project deadlines and budgets.
  • Manage staffing needs, including hiring, layoffs, and performance reviews.
  • Administer and enforce company policies, including safety, quality control, and corrective actions as needed.
  • Monitor field progress, manpower, materials, and equipment utilization; report daily and weekly updates as required.
  • Participate in project meetings and contribute to discussions regarding cost, schedule, and resource planning.
  • Inspect work periodically to ensure compliance with project specifications and company standards.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and training to Foremen and crew members.
  • Support quality control and safety inspections; ensure compliance with company and customer requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of employee time, production, and equipment usage.
  • Resolve on-site issues and coordinate with Project Management to maintain workflow and schedule adherence.
  • Oversee field equipment maintenance and cost control.

Tools and Technology Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of construction tools, equipment, and field layout instruments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic scheduling or project management software.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.

Travel and Work Hours

  • Must maintain a valid driver's license and be available to travel to various project sites as needed.
  • Most travel will be local or regional; occasional overnight stays may be required.
  • Standard schedule is Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week, with overtime, weekends, or extended hours as project needs dictate.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5-6 years of experience in field supervision, general construction, or industrial project management.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and crews simultaneously.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.
