TITLE: School Bus / Transportation Mechanic
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
LOCATION OF WORK: Bus Garage
STARTING DATE: TBD
RATE OF PAY: TBD
HOURS TO WORK: 8 hours per day
CLASSIFICATION: Mechanic
JOB GOAL(S):
The primary job goal of the School Bus/Transportation Mechanic is to oversee the safe maintenance of school vehicles in accordance with District, State, and Federal requirements. This involves performing skilled repair and maintenance.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
Certification:
- State of Michigan Heavy Duty Mechanic or ASE certification
- Must obtain State of Michigan mechanic certification in auto, heavy trucks / buses within one year of employment. Certification should be for electrical, suspension, brakes and engines
- CDL B with PS endorsement or the ability to obtain
- Forklift certification preferred
Work Experience:
- Two years of hands-on experience as an auto, bus, or truck mechanic required
- Computer skills (e.g., Word, Excel, Google) required
- Ability to cut, weld and fabricate preferred but not required
Duties:
- Maintain accurate vehicle information records for each vehicle and accurate time accounts of work performed
- Assist in maintaining records and other local and state required records and reports. Build collaborative relationships with other staff and administrators
- Assist in preparing repair estimates and recommendations as needed
- Plan and oversee a preventive maintenance program, including vehicle inspections
- Attend workshops and professional meetings as requested
- Supervise and perform skilled operations in the repair of gasoline and diesel motor equipment, including trucks, tractors and other districts equipment
- Order parts, supplies and equipment
- Oversee services provided by outside contractors
- Operate any of a variety of automotive equipment.
- Diagnose vehicle problems and make corrections on the following:
- Gas and diesel engine repair
- Automatic transmission
- Rear-end assemblies
- Front-end work
- Brakes (air/hydraulic)
- Electrical systems
- Heating and cooling systems
- Engine tune-up (gas/diesel)
- Body work
- Fabric and repair of orthopedic adaptive equipment
- Follow all safety rules and regulations and machinery safety guards.
- Regular and reliable, in person attendance.
- Communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing
- Read and interpret documents, correspondence and manuals
- Drive bus when requested
- Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor
Essential Job Functions:
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- Must provide your own tools.
- Ability to perform all physical duties required of a school bus driver.
- Capable of lifting up to 75 lbs and position equipment
