About the Role
The Senior Clinician, under the guidance of the Team Leader, Manager and Consultant Psychiatrist, collaborates with team members to deliver high-quality clinical treatment, recovery, and trauma-informed support to a caseload of consumers with a lived experience of mental illness and complex needs.
- Foster strong therapeutic alliances with consumers and actively involve them, along with their family/carers/supporters, in comprehensive care planning and evaluation processes.
- Conduct thorough assessments, deliver targeted interventions, and provide treatment for individuals with intricate mental health needs, aligning practices with local policies and strategic directions.
- Contribute significantly to primary, secondary, and tertiary consultation services, actively engaging in community development, education, and establishing effective liaisons with other supportive agencies.
Classifications for this positions will range from Registered Psychiatric Nurse Grade 4 NP75 - NP77 ($112,465 - $121,113 per annum pro rata)
Your Contribution
- Usually 5 years post qualification in Nursing dependant on demonstrated and proven abilities as listed below
- Demonstrated leadership ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and to contribute to a positive team environment within a community setting
- Proven ability to provide high quality mental health interventions to people with serious mental illness, including assessment, treatment, case management, crisis intervention, rehabilitation, demonstrated skills in engaging consumers with complex needs and a capacity to identify and respond to dual diagnosis consumers.

POSITION PURPOSE
The Continuing Care Team offers specialized mental health treatment and support during business hours throughout the week. Utilizing the Strengths Model of Recovery-Oriented Practice, this multidisciplinary team provides customized clinical and therapeutic interventions tailored to the unique needs of consumers, carers, and supporters. This approach ensures individualized care, focusing on leveraging each consumer’s strengths to promote recovery and well-being.
The Senior Clinician, under the guidance of the Team Leader, Manager and Consultant Psychiatrist, collaborates with team members to deliver high-quality clinical treatment, recovery, and trauma-informed support to a caseload of consumers with a lived experience of mental illness and complex needs. Clinical responsibilities encompass comprehensive assessment, individualized care planning, therapeutic interventions, and ongoing support tailored to each consumer's unique needs, ensuring an integrated approach to their recovery and well-being.
The position also provides leadership and supervision functions for nursing and more junior staff, actively contributing to quality activities at a local and mental health service level. In addition to the clinical work a significant component of the role involves the development and maintenance of sustainable working partnerships with a range of other service providers both internal and external of the St Vincent’s’ Health organisation.
POSITION DUTIES

- Conduct thorough assessments, deliver targeted interventions, and provide treatment for individuals with intricate mental health needs, aligning practices with local policies and strategic directions.
- Contribute significantly to primary, secondary, and tertiary consultation services, actively engaging in community development, education, and establishing effective liaisons with other supportive agencies.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development, actively participating in discipline-specific meetings and training sessions.
- Maintain high standards of clinical practice and professional conduct at all times, ensuring the well-being and satisfaction of those under care.
- Collaborate seamlessly within the multi-disciplinary team, supporting other care partners and ensuring a holistic approach to patient care.
- Uphold meticulous documentation practices in line with local policies, encompassing clinical records, outcome measures, and Client Management Interface reporting.
- Ensure strict compliance with activity-based funding requirements, diligently recording daily contacts, phase of care, outcome measures, and any provided diagnoses.
- Provide clinical leadership to multidisciplinary staff members and actively contribute to clinical practice within the mental health service as a senior staff member
- Provide discipline specific supervision of staff and students fostering a culture of learning.

LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT
St. Vincent’s Mental Health (SVMH) includes an adult area mental health service for the inner-city areas of Yarra and Boroondara. The Adult Mental Health service components are: The Footbridge Community Care Unit (CCU), a 44 bed Acute Inpatient Service (AIS) located on the St. Vincent’s Hospital Fitzroy Campus, the North Fitzroy PARC and two community mental health services (CMHS) at Hawthorn and East Melbourne (Clarendon CMHS) consisting of Continuing Care (CCT), Mobile Support and Treatment Service (MSTS) and Homeless Outreach (CHOPS) services, Psychiatric Triage and Crisis Assessment and Treatment (CAT) service, Police, Ambulance and Clinical Response (PACER), ED Mental Health, Extended Triage and The Primary Intervention Care Team (PICT), Hospital Outreach Post Suicide Engagement (HOPE), Supporting Tenants at Yarra Housing Project (STAY).
A Consultation & Liaison Service is provided to the general health service. NEXUS Dual Diagnosis Service, the Body Image and Eating Disorders Assessment and Treatment Service (BETRS) are regional services. State-wide services include the Victorian Dual Disability Service and the Victorian Transcultural Mental Health. The Acute Inpatient Service includes 5 beds designated as the Koori State-wide Inpatient Service and linked to and supported by the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service.
St Vincent’s Mental Health is committed the recruitment and retention of high-quality staff. The service aims to support staff to maintain and develop their skills to provide excellent clinical care and to meet their own personal and career goals. SVMH has a strong education and research focus in addition to affiliations with a number of universities and educational institutions. All SVMH clinical staff are expected to be familiar, and practice in a manner consistent with the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce.
SELECTION CRITERIA
ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION, LICENSE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum of at least 5 years clinical experience within Mental Health Services post qualification
- Registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
- Current Victorian driver’s license
- Current police check

- Extensive experience in the delivery of clinical mental health services and preferably in a diverse range of mental health service settings, knowledge of relevant legislation, mental health policy directions and principles and practice of community based service delivery including case management;
- Demonstrated ability in working as part of the multi-disciplinary clinical team in promoting a standard of excellence in clinical practice. This includes contributing to team clinical processes such as Clinical Review and supervision for staff and students
- A comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 2022.
- Commitment to work collaboratively and effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team with multiple key stakeholders both internal and external of the St Vincent’s Health organization (including consumers, carers, family members and community agencies)
- Demonstrated ability to working collaboratively with clients and carers to promote self-determination and enable progress towards reaching personal goals
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including problem solving ability and conflict resolution skills, as well as sound oral and writing skills.
- Knowledge of appropriate medication and administration management including relevant legislation
OTHER NON-ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge and experience of working with consumers with a dual diagnosis
- Knowledge and experience of working with consumers with a lived experience of BPD and PTSD
