About the Department
Position Duties
Pierce County is looking for a dedicated Director of Communications who has:
- Deep knowledge of media relations, public relations, digital engagement, branding, public information campaigns, and crisis communications, with expertise in developing and executing comprehensive and progressive communication strategies.
- Skill in building and leading large, multi-disciplinary communications teams, developing county-wide communications strategies, and delivering clear, consistent, and high-impact messaging across diverse platforms.
- Experience in providing direct executive support, guiding collaboration, and maintaining strong partnerships with elected officials, department leaders, community partners, and internal stakeholders.
- Committment to building a culture of openness, innovation, and responsiveness in government communications so that Pierce County residents receive the information they need to thrive in safe and welcoming communities.

Communications Highlights:
- Mission and Vision: The Communications Department develops and manages internal and external communications strategies that promote transparency, accessibility, and engagement. The department envisions a creative, coordinated, and responsive communications program serving all Pierce County residents.
- Comprehensive Support: Communications supports every Executive department by leading media relations, public information campaigns, digital content, video production, and employee communications. The team manages the County’s public website, social media, and award-winning video production.
- Commitment to Excellence: With 29 FTEs and a $7 million biennial budget, the department delivers thousands of communications projects each year—from website updates and video productions to social media and community engagement— advancing Pierce County’s mission of safe, welcoming, and connected communities.
- Timely and Trusted Public Communication: The department ensures residents receive timely, accurate information about County programs, major projects, and emergencies—helping the public stay informed, prepared, and engaged in the moments that matter most.

Minimum Qualifications
Ten (10) years of experience in marketing, public relations, and/or journalism to include four (4) years of supervisory experience AND t wo (2) years of experience providing direct executive-level communications support or experience serving on an executive leadership team. Post-secondary education with an emphasis in communications, public relations, or public administration may substitute for up to four (4) years of the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Additional education or experience which clearly indicates the ability to perform the essential functions of this position may substitute on a year-for-year basis
